Summary & Insights

Can a stock market that looks “bubblicious” and resembles the dot-com era actually be cheaper today than it was in January? This paradox sits at the heart of Tom Lee’s bullish outlook for the S&P 500, as he argues that rising earnings estimates have effectively lowered the price-to-earnings ratio even as nominal prices climb. While the market is currently heavily concentrated in “bottleneck” stocks—specifically semiconductors—Lee believes we are entering a new structural cycle where AI isn’t just a software play, but a massive physical infrastructure build involving robotics and energy.

The conversation delves into the precarious “key man risk” inherent in the current AI boom, noting that much of the market’s trajectory depends on the strategic execution of a few individuals, like Sam Altman. There is a tension between the staggering losses reported by AI pioneers like OpenAI and the potential for “home run” IPOs that could unlock trillions in wealth. Lee suggests that while these companies are currently burning cash, they are creating complex reasoning models that could eventually subsume entirely new industries, similar to how Meta transformed user-generated content into a global advertising juggernaut.

Looking toward the second half of the year, the forecast is a volatile mix of “V-shaped” recoveries and systemic tests. Lee predicts a potential bear-market-like correction driven by a new Federal Reserve Chair’s appetite for redefining inflation, the massive supply shock of SpaceX shares unlocking, and geopolitical instability affecting petroleum lubricants. Despite these risks, he remains constructive, betting on the dynamism of U.S. innovation and the eventual integration of blockchain as the essential “trust layer” for a future economy run by autonomous AI agents.

Surprising Insights

  • The Valuation Paradox: Despite the S&P 500 being up significantly year-to-date, the market has actually become “cheaper” because earnings consensus for 2027 rose from $350 to $400, outpacing the price increase.
  • The “Uncanny Valley” of Wealth: As AI agents and robots begin to generate wealth independently, we may reach a point where delegated agents own more assets than the humans who created them, necessitating blockchain for control and settlement.
  • Robotics vs. iPhones: The semiconductor boom is fundamentally different this time because a single autonomous robot requires exponentially more chip power (potentially 50x) than a smartphone, changing the cyclical nature of the industry.
  • Wealth Unlock via IPOs: Large private IPOs like SpaceX can actually boost GDP before they hit the public market, as the massive wealth created for private holders allows them to borrow heavily against their holdings.

Practical Takeaways

  • Look “Downstream” of AI: While the market is currently focused on the “bottlenecks” (chips and hardware), look for opportunities in “downstream” beneficiaries—software and financial services companies that are integrating AI to compound their productivity.
  • Monitor Credit Spreads: If you are worried about a market crash, watch corporate credit spreads rather than equity prices; tight spreads despite high rates suggest there is still significant liquidity in the system.
  • Prepare for “V-Shaped” Volatility: In a strong innovation cycle, severe corrections are often short-lived. Avoid panic-selling during sharp drawdowns if the underlying economic growth remains intact.
  • Diversify into AI Infrastructure Partners: Consider the “beta” of AI in other markets; countries like South Korea and Taiwan are structural partners in the AI build-out and may offer high-growth alternatives to U.S. tech.

As we approach the 2020 election, I want to make sure the conversation on this show reflects the actual choice the country is facing. So we are going to be doing a few episodes, including this one, with guests who believe Donald Trump is the better candidate this November.

I wanted to start with foreign policy because that’s where Trump has been most influential. Trump has successfully broken the previous bipartisan consensus on key foreign policy issues. The way Republicans — and now even Democrats — talk about trade, alliances, Russia, and China has changed dramatically over the last four years. That’s an important shift, whether or not you agree with it.

Rebeccah Heinrichs is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute where she specializes in nuclear deterrence and missile defense, a former adviser to congressional Republicans, and one of the sharpest defenders of Donald Trump’s foreign policy. Heinrichs sees a clear foreign policy worldview animating the Trump administration — one with more successes to its name than critics are willing to admit. I see a worldview that is inconsistently applied, and whose goals are often undermined, by the President’s impulsive, anti-strategic behavior on the world stage. So I asked Heinrichs to come on the show and persuade me that I’m wrong.

In this conversation Heinrichs and I discuss how Trump shattered the foreign policy consensus that preceded him, why he sees China as such a central threat to American interests, the trade-offs that come with engaging in multilateral agreements and institutions, whether the threats America faces require global cooperation to address, the importance (or lack thereof) of how other countries view America, the ways that Trump undermines his own purported foreign policy aims, Trump’s ally-bashing, the US-Saudi Arabia alliance, the Trump administration’s stance on human rights, what we can expect from Trump in his second term, and much more.
