0:01:09 So, Martin, it looks like you’ve helped spark a little bit of an existential crisis on venture Twitter.
0:01:12 I thought we’d all come here to talk about it.
0:01:14 Great. Super. I’m still excited to be here.
0:01:17 Why don’t we recap, Martin, from your perspective?
0:01:18 What were you saying in that tweet?
0:01:19 What were you trying to say in that tweet?
0:01:23 Then we can get into the great back and forth that you and Leo had and get into the conversation.
0:01:26 So, let me paraphrase the tweet.
0:01:28 The paraphrased version of the tweet is,
0:01:33 “It’s dangerous to do non-consensus investing.”
0:01:35 Like, that’s a dangerous idea.
0:01:37 The impetus of the tweet, which, by the way, wasn’t well thought out,
0:01:40 which I think a lot of the viral tweets happen to be not well thought out,
0:01:43 is, you know, I’ve been an investor for 10 years.
0:01:48 I’ve done almost 200 investments, either as, like, running the fund or being directly involved.
0:01:57 And it seems being blinkered to how VCs view companies is actually quite dangerous
0:02:00 because you’re so dependent on follow-on capital.
0:02:03 And actually, it reminds me a lot of being an academic.
0:02:04 I used to write a lot of papers.
0:02:07 And, like, you do all of this great research, but when you wrote the paper,
0:02:12 if you didn’t actually think about how the program committee would view it, like, it wouldn’t get accepted, right?
0:02:14 It felt very similar to that.
0:02:15 And so that was the origins.
0:02:17 But I want to be very clear.
0:02:18 I did not say it.
0:02:20 I would never say consensus investing is a good idea.
0:02:25 I’m just saying not being aware of consensus is a bad idea.
0:02:27 And I think the last thing I’ll say on this,
0:02:32 I think that my underlying belief is early markets are actually pretty darn efficient,
0:02:35 a lot more efficient than people realize.
0:02:41 And so if you’re alone in your view, you may just be missing something.

0:02:46 What was your reaction?
0:02:52 Yeah, I mean, I actually agree with a lot of what Martin just said, which is eventually you have to get to consensus,
0:02:59 whether it’s when you’re investing or later, because otherwise, if you’re dependent on capital markets, it’s very hard to keep the company alive if nobody wants to fund it.
0:03:09 I would say for me, and maybe we invest a tick earlier, more towards pre-CNMC, but for me, a lot of my best investments have been more on the non-consensus side.
0:03:20 Not in terms of I had some crazy good insight and nobody else had it and I’m just brilliant, but more like these companies often struggled in the early days because before there’s proof points, it’s not obvious that it’ll be a good idea.
0:03:27 And then once they get good, the valuation skyrocket so fast that like you could still get good multiples, but they’re just much lower than the early stages.
0:03:38 Yeah. And then there’s sort of broader commentary on looking at a list of big winners over the last 15, 20 years and say, hey, what was consensus, which were consensus, which were non-consensus.
0:03:42 And then Martin, what were kind of your reactions to that sort of broader commentary?
0:03:50 Well, listen, I mean, again, it wasn’t meant to be a technical tweet where like the wording was exact.
0:03:58 And so like, like on the face of it, it’s almost like an ill-defined statement because we don’t know what consensus means, right?
0:04:01 And so then everybody picks apart the consensus.
0:04:13 But here’s my reaction to the list of like the Airbnbs and this and that, which is, I think we need to be very careful not to conflate a company having a hard round with market consensus, right?
0:04:16 Like if you look at the list, like Keith Rabois put out, which is great.
0:04:17 And I love Keith.
0:04:22 I mean, these are like MIT founders, known spaces.
0:04:31 Like I’ll bet if you took like the median value of their raises over the life cycle of the company, I’ll bet they’re way above market.
0:04:33 Many of the companies were YC companies.
0:04:46 And so I just think it’s so easy to like come up with these anecdotal, oh, this one company had a tough raise when that’s definitely not within the spirit of what I was trying to say, which is markets are actually quite efficient.
0:04:50 If the market’s efficient and it’s a good company, the price is going to be high.
0:04:57 And if you don’t recognize that, then you’re probably beating yourself as opposed to the market, right?
0:05:03 And so like it really comes down to you shouldn’t be looking for good deals with respect to other investors.
0:05:08 You should be looking for good companies and price shouldn’t sway you from that.
0:05:09 I mean, that’s really at the heart of this.
0:05:19 And so I just don’t think that list, unless you actually run the numbers, which we haven’t done, I just don’t think it demonstrates that the idea that consensus is important is wrong at all.
0:05:23 Yeah, and I think there are a few quibbles I had with some of the names on that list.
0:05:29 Like some people put Andrill and it certainly was a controversial investment, but, you know, Palmer Luckey, you know, having fun.
0:05:33 I mean, second time founder, billion dollar exit, Trey, who’s phenomenal.
0:05:40 You know, this is in the shadow of Elon, who shows that you can already create these defense tech companies.
0:05:45 I mean, if that’s our definition of non-consensus, it just shows how insular we are as a community.
0:05:48 I mean, it’s almost an indictment of us that we even make this list.
0:05:50 And wasn’t the seed round at like 100 or something?
0:05:52 Like it was very expensive.
0:05:56 Every round was super expensive.
0:06:00 I’m not sure an ex-unicorn founder would ever be non-consensus, really.
0:06:15 Yeah, it is interesting because there’s also sort of, you know, there are rounds that are maybe non-consensus at 10 million or something, but then become super hot rounds at 50 or 100 and then become $10 billion companies or $100 billion companies.
0:06:19 And even if you invested at that consensus round, you 10x or 100x.
0:06:24 And so it’s sort of in the face of, hey, if it’s a hot deal, that must mean it’s not good.
0:06:29 Peter Thiel once had a line which was like the faster and higher the up round, the more you should invest because it’s like working.
0:06:32 Yeah, I would love to do a correlation analysis.
0:06:37 Actually, Leo and I had, I thought, a very interesting discussion on trying to figure out how you’d actually measure this, how you’d actually throw some data at it.
0:06:39 And we actually have an analyst working on it now.
0:06:40 Like the data isn’t ready yet.
0:06:41 So I have a new one.
0:06:43 Actually, I want to test this with you, Leo, on a good thing to test.
0:06:54 So I’ll bet the best prediction of a, the best correlate of a high up round outside of the business is the fact that the previous round was hot.
0:06:56 I think that’s probably true.
0:07:06 And if that’s the case, it would suggest that the market’s actually pretty efficient because it’s almost inductive that like the previous round knew that the next round was going to be hot.
0:07:08 So I do agree with that.
0:07:12 I think the question for me is like, where is there more opportunity, right?
0:07:19 Because if the five hot companies keep having great rounds, and then there’s like 10,000 not hot companies, but 100 of them will become hot over time.
0:07:25 Even though the odds of becoming hot or low, most of the hot companies end up coming from the not hot batch, right?
0:07:26 Right.
0:07:37 So the question comes down to, is it easier to spot the company nobody sees or get into the company that’s obviously good?
0:07:45 And maybe even further than that, which is, to what extent do even high price rounds under price hot deals?
0:08:09 Because if I’m bright, if the view is correct that hot deals are hot because they’re good companies, not like actually the market is very efficient, and that drives the most of returns, then I think the next obvious question is, well, if that’s the case, then the market isn’t that efficient because it’s underpriced the company, right?
0:08:22 If the majority of returns are in high price rounds and the market has underpriced it, but I think risk adjusted, that’s not necessarily true, which is, it could be still price right because there’s still chances it goes to zero.
0:08:34 So I guess my sense is, until we run the numbers, we’re not going to quite know the answer, but I think a lot of these theories prove out pretty anecdotally.
0:08:37 And I think maybe that’s the problem, there’s kind of an anecdote for every theory.
0:08:50 Yeah, I think the basket analysis is probably the most interesting one of like, not how did this one company do, but how did this portfolio of companies that raised like really quick follow on, or had like 10 term sheets at the series A, like how did those end up doing over time?
0:09:06 There are even cases in my portfolio where a super hot company from an investor standpoint, so many term sheets, the business didn’t work out at the level that you would kind of expect, but the outcome was still really good.
0:09:16 And so in some level, even independent of the productive asset, like human opinion about it matters.
0:09:21 So there’s almost two ways you can slice this conversation. One of them is like, the asset is what’s productive and produces the value.
0:09:27 Right. And the market will determine if that’s valuable or not.
0:09:29 Right. So that’s kind of this productive asset view.
0:09:33 And that’s kind of the one that I hold, which I think that actually investors are very smart.
0:09:39 I think that they know which companies are good and then they pay for those. That’s kind of my view, but it’s a productive asset view.
0:09:44 But there’s another view, which is independent of whether the company is good or not.
0:09:46 There are things that people think are good.
0:09:52 And so you’re almost like playing to like the human perception of the company independent of the underlying business.
0:09:58 And I would say, again, anecdotally, until we run the numbers we won’t know, that also seems to be a bit true.
0:10:04 Yeah. So I’ve been in venture for like 12, 13 years now. I’ve definitely seen this in sectors where like sectors fall in and out of favor.
0:10:07 Right. We have like e-commerce was hot and then it was dead.
0:10:10 And then like Dollar Shave Club got acquired and it was hot again.
0:10:14 And it’s like e-commerce, I think the fundamentals didn’t change that much year to year.
0:10:19 But like the valuations and the like appetite for investing and maybe starting companies changed a lot year to year.
0:10:22 And so that to me sort of an indicator, like it’s not just the fundamentals.
0:10:24 There are all these other like forces, as you mentioned.
0:10:25 Yeah, totally.
0:10:42 One other part to your tweet, Martin, that I think was underappreciated was sort of the risks of founders of being seen as non consensus in the same way that because founders need to raise money and they need to raise follow on funding within 18 to 24 months, sometimes even sooner.
0:10:48 And so if everyone’s passing on you, people are bragging about how other investors don’t want to do your deal.
0:10:51 That’s not going to be super helpful to you in your next round.
0:10:58 I actually think the most interesting aspect of the tweet was like the sociological study that followed of like how different people interpret it.
0:11:00 Right. Like the tweet itself was pretty banal. Right.
0:11:03 It’s just kind of non statement. It’s almost tautological.
0:11:06 But like the like different constituencies viewed it very differently.
0:11:18 So like I would say relatively inexperienced investors kind of used it as an opportunity to be like, oh, Andreessen Hort’s consensus invests, which anybody that knows anything about our investment knows is just totally not true.
0:11:23 So even my own portfolio, many of the top deals I’ve done, nobody else was in the deal, etc. Right.
0:11:27 So like this is a statement about consensus investing. So that was one cohort.
0:11:35 There was another cohort like Leo and Keith, who have a lot of data and they’ve had a lot of really interesting things to say, and that ended up in great discussion.
0:11:42 I think there’s still a lot more to do there. But most of the founders and I got a bazillion DMs were like, you’re totally right.
0:11:56 So the founders clearly feel this tension that is dangerous to be non consensus because they have to cater to VCs and they know it and they see the pattern match responses.
0:12:07 They deal with this all of the time. And so from a founder perspective, it’s like you almost have to be non consensus to have alpha in the actual product market, but you have to look consensus when you’re raising.
0:12:12 And I think that’s actually probably right. I think this is probably one area where I differ a bit.
0:12:19 I think there’s benefits to being non consensus because from the company side, I think when the money is hard to raise, you tend to be more frugal with it.
0:12:26 And then also if the next round is less certain, like I think there’s less of a sort of like it could crumble at any moment aspect. Right.
0:12:36 Because I think when it is high and you’re raising something around very quickly, unless the assumption of things will go perfectly, if anything slows down, it’s like that you can’t raise any more capital all of a sudden. Right.
0:12:41 And I think if you’re in the mentality of growing quickly and spending, I think that’s pretty hard on the flip side.
0:12:46 If you’re not consensus, it tends to be like you tend to be more cash efficient, tend to be more frugal out of necessity.
0:12:53 I think the other side is depends on the form of like consensusness, but sometimes there’s also like much softer diligence.
0:12:58 Like I think the kind of the worst form of consensus I’ve seen is like, oh, Sequoia and Andreessen did this round.
0:13:01 Like, let me just do a 2x markup in two weeks because I want to be in the same company.
0:13:02 Yeah.
0:13:05 And then like there’s no diligence there. Right. It’s just like, oh, this is hot. Let me do it.
0:13:10 But I think then like maybe we’re looking like, is it actually a good business like Sequoia and Andreessen?
0:13:12 Like we all make good investments and bad investments.
0:13:16 And so it’s like maybe this is one of the bad ones and you’re just marking it up because you want to be in the hot deal.
0:13:18 And like that ends up not being good for anyone.
0:13:22 I think this is a tremendously important and good point.
0:13:31 I tend to believe now that most companies fail from indigestion, not starvation, which is they just raise too much money too easily.
0:13:35 They don’t listen to the actual market, which is the customer base.
0:13:41 And as a result, they just have a bunch of bad practices and end up running out of money.
0:13:43 And I think that there’s a lot to that.
0:13:51 I actually think in 2021, if you just did a study of that cohort, the companies that had these, you know, these billion dollar bees, if you remember that time, it was totally crazy.
0:13:54 I’ll bet that’s probably one of the biggest wipeouts of capital.
0:14:00 So I definitely think like consensus investing is definitely very dangerous.
0:14:03 And only leaning into this from a founder is definitely dangerous.
0:14:07 But I also think the flip side is true, which is you’re totally blinkered to it.
0:14:08 I think your life is pretty tough.
0:14:17 And then there’s a broad question as to like, of the companies that do win, how many of them are sort of competitive rounds versus not competitive rounds?
0:14:24 And sort of what is the duration between them being non-competitive rounds and then becoming not non-competitive?
0:14:26 And what percentage are really able to?
0:14:29 And one question I have is like, is the market getting more efficient over time?
0:14:31 A lot more investors.
0:14:35 We should be getting smarter as asset class on how to evaluate these companies.
0:14:36 A lot more capital.
0:14:37 Are we getting better?
0:14:39 And if so, what does that mean?
0:14:42 Oh, I’d love to hear Leo’s view on this.
0:14:44 It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while.
0:14:48 My take would be that for non-consensus companies, it’s getting more efficient.
0:14:52 Because the more investors there are, the more likely you are to find at least one or two that like what you’re doing.
0:14:55 I think for the consensus companies, it’s starting to get more inefficient, right?
0:15:01 Which is like when you have 10 term sheets, you get, you know, 5x the market, like what maybe the fair value should be.
0:15:08 And then like it’s great for the founder and maybe against a little bit more of a house of cards if things go south at all.
0:15:11 But it’s also like, it’s not necessarily great for investors, right?
0:15:21 Because you might have to pay 2, 3, 4x over like the actual intrinsic value of a company or like the future, like the likely future value of a company in order to get in.
0:15:24 But that would be actually, but that would be actually efficient, right?
0:15:29 It’s just the prices actually approaching the return profile.
0:15:31 From a market standpoint, that would be efficient.
0:15:33 I mean, it sucks from an investor standpoint because prices go up.
0:15:34 Yeah, that’s what I’m saying, right?
0:15:45 Like for founders, it’s getting like hyper-efficient or maybe like, you know, like there’s such an imbalance for like the really hot companies that, you know, maybe your price gets bit up way past where it should be.
0:15:49 And similarly, like for non-consensus companies, it’s the opposite, right?
0:15:53 Where like there’s not enough investors, so your price is lower than it should be perhaps, right?
0:16:00 But I think there’s like, for me, like those two are kind of opposite ends of the spectrum.
0:16:02 Yeah, this is a great, this is a great question.
0:16:03 I totally agree.
0:16:04 This is a great question.
0:16:16 So I think we can all acknowledge that there’s a failure mode where the consensus gets bubbly and then companies raise too much capital and then there’s a bunch of wipeouts, right?
0:16:18 So that has always happened.
0:16:19 That will always happen.
0:16:22 So that’s just part of the market.
0:16:29 I think we can also all agree that there’s parts of the market where there’s probably unnecessary pessimism.
0:16:44 Like, so for example, right now during this AI craze, like, you know, in my area of traditional infra, or of infra, a lot of the traditional companies that, you know, two years ago would be great, like can’t even raise right now just because they’re not in the sweet spot.
0:16:49 And so I think that will always be an aspect of the market, too.
0:17:10 But in general, for the mean investment, I do feel like the market over time has gotten a lot more efficient, meaning, you know, we can deploy more dollars with more regularity and the price is converging on what will ultimately be a fair price.
0:17:17 You know, this is acknowledging both of these failure modes on either side of this.
0:17:18 I mean, we’re seeing one right now.
0:17:19 I mean, it’s the reality.
0:17:29 I mean, AI, you know, there’s AI companies that clearly are raising, you know, speculative money where nobody even really understands the business model.
0:17:30 There’s great companies that can’t get invested.
0:17:32 So we’re seeing this right now.
0:17:39 But I will still say, the reality is, is OpenAI has grown tremendously and Anthropic has grown tremendously and Cursor has grown tremendously.
0:17:48 And so, like, there is some underlying market signals to fuel the chaos.
0:17:49 Yeah.
0:17:57 I think part of it’s like, if you ever look at vintage year data for venture funds, it’s probably a good way to see if, you know, how consensus and not consensus do over time.
0:18:02 Because when you look at, like, the dot-com bubble years, like, I think the median fund was terrible.
0:18:04 And I think it’s just like, hey, everyone overpaid.
0:18:06 And then the companies weren’t worth that.
0:18:09 And so, like, you know, even though everything was hot, like, it didn’t do well.
0:18:11 And then a lot of the funds didn’t do well.
0:18:16 And if you look at, like, the Airbnb, you know, Uber, like, 2010-ish era, it’s kind of the opposite, right?
0:18:19 Or, like, I think the top quartile funds, like, crush it.
0:18:22 And it’s because the market was pessimistic.
0:18:25 And so if you’re willing to invest and, like, you had a different opinion, you did really well.
0:18:28 And now it’s probably kind of somewhere in the middle.
0:18:31 I mean, maybe I’ll just go through, like, kind of my own startup.
0:18:37 Just as kind of a single anecdote to frame the conversation a little bit, right?
0:18:40 So, you know, I did my PhD at Stanford.
0:18:45 I was a classic, you know, take the research, do a startup.
0:18:49 You know, we had so many term sheets before we had any idea what we were doing.
0:18:51 You know, and it was, like, the hottest thing ever.
0:18:54 And it was great.
0:18:56 And so we did a seed fund.
0:18:59 Actually, Andy Radcliffe, you know, benchmark Andy Radcliffe, joined my board.
0:19:04 And, you know, we rose at the time, which would have been a super, super high-priced kind of seed round,
0:19:05 which is 10 million post.
0:19:07 This is in 2007.
0:19:12 You know, then the market tanked in 2008.
0:19:15 And we still didn’t know what we were doing.
0:19:19 And, you know, it was just a bunch of researchers.
0:19:21 And so we couldn’t raise any money at all.
0:19:30 I mean, Sequoia very famously, you know, gave us a black eye and, you know, we couldn’t raise.
0:19:41 You know, as we started to come out of the recession, Andreessen Horowitz NEA Lightspeed, a few got very interested.
0:19:44 And then we had a pretty hot round again.
0:19:49 We went, Andreessen, it was actually over the market price, even though the business wasn’t quite working.
0:19:50 But it was signs of life.
0:19:53 Then we had an incredibly hot round because beans started working.
0:19:56 And then when we actually sold the company, I mean, you know, it returned a fund.
0:20:02 You know, it was one of the highest acquisitions on multiples of revenue at the time in enterprise software.
0:20:10 And so you kind of asked the question, was the initial flurry of interest warranted or not?
0:20:14 Because it turns out, like, we were probably a month from going bankrupt.
0:20:16 And we actually didn’t know what we were doing.
0:20:18 And the company definitely wasn’t working.
0:20:21 And actually what we had pitched at that time didn’t make any sense.
0:20:27 Like, we were like, we’re going to change, you know, you know, switch hardware, which didn’t make any sense.
0:20:32 And so there’s one view that’s like the market was over exuberant.
0:20:33 You were lucky.
0:20:36 There’s another view that says actually the initial conditions were there to do it.
0:20:46 I just feel like if you run the data, it just seems like the companies that have good outcomes did have sufficient interest along the way because there are enough signals to do it.
0:20:51 I think at least on my side, for a lot of the pre-seeds and seeds I’ve done, I went back.
0:20:57 I think over my top like 10 investments, maybe six or seven or eight, took them months to raise a seed round.
0:21:02 And, you know, like a lot of times, like a lot of passes, like they were all, you know, down to the wire.
0:21:05 But then they ended up doing better over time.
0:21:11 I think that transition from like non-consensus to consensus ended up being really important because if you never transition, it’s really hard.
0:21:12 Right.
0:21:15 And if you’re always, you know, if you’re always consensus, that’s great for you.
0:21:22 But like one thing I noticed that was interesting is a lot of the companies that struggled, obviously, some of them just go to zero, right?
0:21:25 Because they struggled because the business isn’t that great.
0:21:26 People recognize it.
0:21:37 But the ones that did well, a lot of times the gap between like the seed and A or the A and B was literally like 20x or 50x, right?
0:21:43 And so I think part of it’s like as an investor, you can still get good returns at like the series A or B in those companies.
0:21:53 But it’s just, I think it’s so different to invest at the seed, where there’s like 1000x versus like the A at a billion, where now maybe there’s still like a 10x or 20x, which is very different.
0:22:02 So I’ve got a question for you, Leo, because I think that you play a bit of a different game than we do, which is, so if you have a seed, which is, let’s call it non-consensus.
0:22:09 And again, we’re using this very vague definition of a consensus, but like, you know, they’re having a tough time raising, you’re the only person putting money in.
0:22:13 Do you have a theory on how it will be consensus?
0:22:20 Or is your belief that the underlying productive asset is going to do very well and that by definition is consensus?
0:22:22 Do you see the question?
0:22:25 So the question is, is it this is just true belief in the underlying business?
0:22:32 It’s just like, like, like the ultimate, I mean, the ultimate sign of success is just the business is really working.
0:22:35 So are you like, for the next raise, the business will definitely be working?
0:22:40 Or do you have some other theory on what will attract the investors?
0:22:43 I’d say it’s often the latter.
0:22:47 I would say, and it’s especially true these days, because I’m investing more in deep tech companies.
0:22:57 And so at seed, it’s very rare to see like, oh, there’s an asset that’s going to be working here at the series A, because usually the assets still going to be like being developed at the series A or maybe series B.
0:23:04 I think what I’m looking for is like, there’s maybe not enough here for somebody to write a five or 10 or $20 million check.
0:23:12 But the company has milestones that I think if they hit them, then it would become, you know, sort of consensus enough to merit a check of that size.
0:23:17 And then I’m basically trying to evaluate like, okay, the company has these milestones that I think they could hit them or not.
0:23:19 And also if they hit them, are they compelling enough?
0:23:22 But I think that’s sort of the big, you know, investment wager.
0:23:23 Yeah.
0:23:24 Yeah.
0:23:29 So I mean, so in this case, you do think about like what the follow on thing is going to want to see.
0:23:36 You have reached a conclusion for the current round that is non consensus.
0:23:37 Yeah.
0:23:45 And I would say like the consensus piece is part of it in that I definitely meet companies where they’re like, we’re raising three right now, it’ll help us do these milestones.
0:23:47 And then we think we can raise 10.
0:23:54 And then there’s other ones where, you know, it’s like, we’re raising three now, we’re gonna hit these milestones, and then we want to raise like a 50 to $100 million series A.
0:23:55 And that’s actually a much harder bet, right?

0:33:45 It was actually at one point in time, I think it was 40% of the growth of VMware, like the business unit that I ran, that was part of the acquisition.

0:33:55 So as a result, you should say all the check sizes should be high for the winners because the outcome was so good.
0:33:58 And this was, you know, this actually returned a lot of money to a lot of investors.
0:34:16 The, the, the problem with that is I just think that that would mean fund sizes would be too large and you’d have to unlock different pools of, of, of capital, which, which by the way, did start to happen during the SoftBank and the Tiger and the Code 2 era.

0:34:27 And it was actually a macro issue that caused all the pullback.

0:35:30 I mean, there’s a lot of reasons why those could not have worked, including kind of macro cycles.
0:35:33 And also the fact that none of them were Silicon Valley insiders.
0:35:36 None of them were, you know, traditional early stage investors, et cetera.
0:35:43 So there’s a very reasonable question, which is, you know, maybe someone should just go run the Tiger strategy again, but as a, as a Silicon Valley insider.

0:45:54 Right.
0:45:55 You only invest on upside.
0:45:59 And so to me, more dollars going into venture is only a positive for humanity.
0:46:03 And again, I don’t mean to sound too grandiose, but I, I, I do feel it’s just a net positive.
0:46:09 Well, so maybe on that front, like, I think it’s a really interesting perspective.
0:46:14 I feel like a lot of the, more from a company perspective than investor perspective, I feel
0:46:17 like a lot of the most disruptive products were maybe non-consensus at the time.
0:46:18 Totally.
0:46:23 Where you start with, you know, like no buttons on the iPhone or you got like Uber instead
0:46:24 of taxi.
0:46:25 It’s a stranger driving.
0:46:28 And those are the ones where I think if you were like, I’m going to build a taxi company,
0:46:32 but it’s like 20% more efficient, like probably can be a big business, but not quite the same
0:46:37 level of disruption and growth as like, you know, you take a big bet and you might very
0:46:38 high chance you’re wrong.
0:46:41 But if you’re right, like you’re going to be, you know, in a really good position.
0:46:42 Yeah.
0:46:43 And this is so critical.
0:46:44 I’m glad you brought, you brought it out.
0:46:49 Uh, I really believe the best companies themselves are non-consensus to customers.
0:46:55 I just think that the investing market is, is, is, is, is different than that.
0:46:58 Like they kind of understand that.
0:47:05 And therefore a comment on investors being consensus is very different than a product or being consensus.
0:47:06 Does that make sense?
0:47:10 Like investor sentiment, I think is actually much smarter than people think.
0:47:13 Like, I think like the, the adage is VCs are dumb.
0:47:20 Like, um, you know, they just, you know, uh, chase trends and all of that is true.
0:47:25 But the reality is, is as a group, we have identified a cohort of companies that are quite disruptive
0:47:28 and invested in them and, and, and price them.
0:47:33 And, and those, the companies themselves tend to be actually quite non-consensus to the
0:47:35 actual consumer or to the market.
0:47:38 I, I do want to build Martin, Martin, on your, on your point.
0:47:42 Cause I think it’s so interesting just to comment on how not everyone’s incentives are totally
0:47:45 aligned here, especially between sort of the, what’s good for the individual and what’s good
0:47:47 for the ecosystem.
0:47:51 And so in the sense that, yeah, you know, if you’re an individual VC, you don’t, you don’t
0:47:56 want more capital or if you’re a founder, you don’t want more founders in your space.
0:48:00 But to your point, like competition is, and some people were saying competition is bad.
0:48:03 You don’t want competition, but competition is what fuels incredible product.
0:48:05 It’s like the Darwinian process.
0:48:10 Like this is how, you know, we get, you know, a bigger, you know, uh, more, a bigger startup
0:48:15 outcomes, a startup ecosystem, having more, more value, incredible products for, for customers
0:48:16 and users.
0:48:17 This is how we solve cancer, man.
0:48:19 More money goes into VC and we invest in companies.
0:48:24 And as opposed to investing in dying companies is ability to retain their place.
0:48:26 A hundred percent, like all the finance needs to change.
0:48:31 And I think VCs are trying to straddle sort of, you know, LP incentives, founder incentives,
0:48:32 their own incentives.
0:48:35 And, and there is some overlap and, and there’s magic there, but it’s also just worth acknowledging
0:48:38 that not every individual person is aligned and that’s okay.
0:48:42 I also do still very much believe in the, in the barbell that there will be, you know, these
0:48:48 big, these big, you know, sort of, um, massive funds that continue to, to, to, to win and
0:48:49 invest in compound value.
0:48:57 And also these, uh, you know, uh, smaller focus, concentrated, the boutiques who absolutely crush
0:48:58 it.
0:48:59 And we all work together.
0:49:02 So, so Leo, we’re, we’re, we’re going to run, we’re going to run the numbers.
0:49:05 I was trying to get it done by now, but there’s a lot to do that.
0:49:06 The, the, the numbers are fuzzy.
0:49:11 Um, I just want to walk through what we’re, we’re going to be, um, uh, looking at, and
0:49:16 then maybe we’ll schedule another podcast once the numbers are out to actually discuss it.
0:49:23 So one of the numbers we’re going to, uh, look at is if you look at, if you cohort companies
0:49:32 into winners and not winners, call it, uh, looking to whether on average for any, for that company,
0:49:38 the rounds were priced above or below median for other companies at a similar stage.
0:49:39 Right.
0:49:43 So this is going to, this will say whether, you know, is relatively high priced for winners
0:49:44 or not.
0:49:51 And then the other one, which is even more difficult to, to, to determine is given, given
0:49:57 actual returns are the bulk of the returns from companies that were on average high priced
0:49:58 or not.
0:50:04 And I think these two numbers will give us a sense to whether the market is actually pretty
0:50:09 smart about the value and, and the price.
0:50:12 You should not look for price arbitrage if you’re looking for returns.
0:50:15 Does that sound fair?
0:50:16 Yeah.
0:50:17 I think that sounds fair.
0:50:19 I definitely agree with the, not looking for price arbitrage piece.
0:50:24 Cause I will say for me personally, my best investments have been ones on average that took
0:50:26 a while to raise their seed down.
0:50:28 A lot of people didn’t get it or didn’t like it.
0:50:32 Um, but on the flip side, some of the biggest misses are also the ones where it’s like, oh,
0:50:34 we liked everything except the price.
0:50:38 And like, we thought it should be a 10 and some, you know, some big fund gave them a term sheet
0:50:39 at 20 and we passed.
0:50:41 And then now it’s a $10 billion company.
0:50:44 So maybe that was like, maybe that was not a good pass.
0:50:45 Yeah.
0:50:48 You know, you know, honestly, as we, as we go through this conversation, it does strike
0:50:52 me that, uh, I think a lot of this is honestly, it’s just, we have a bit different perspectives.
0:50:55 Like I, I have to deploy a lot more money than you do, right?
0:51:01 Like I’m a, uh, series A investor who needs to basically cap out 30 to 40 million in order
0:51:02 to have a significant position.
0:51:08 And so I may have to be a bit more concerned about this than, than you do at the early stage.
0:51:11 And I’m sure stage does color this conversation quite a bit.
0:51:12 Yeah.
0:51:14 Everything, everything you’re saying is totally sensible to me.
0:51:16 So I don’t think there’s any disagreement.
0:51:21 It was definitely something I was thinking about, which is, uh, like, I think if he, if every check
0:51:24 you write has to be at least a hundred million, I think it’s actually very hard to do a consensus.
0:51:25 Yeah.
0:51:26 Right.
0:51:28 Cause there’s not a lot of companies that hit a stage where you’d invest a hundred million,
0:51:30 but it’s still not clear if it’s a good company or not.
0:51:31 Yeah.
0:51:35 And I think the earlier you go, if it’s like $30 million checks, 10, 5, 1, I think you get
0:51:38 more and more of a category where like you have the option and you could do either one, assuming
0:51:40 you have access to the consensus opportunities.
0:51:44 Leo, I’m curious what, and you know, you guys have absolutely crushed it at seed with, with
0:51:46 some, you know, Robin Hood and Flexport, et cetera.
0:51:52 I’m curious what you think of Rompton’s, um, sort of thesis that multi-stage has won seed
0:51:54 more or less in the last like 10 years.
0:51:58 And then when you look at a lot of the big winners, they were done from multi-stage firms,
0:51:59 you know, at seed.
0:52:03 I’m curious, one, if you agree with that sort of, you know, reading of history.
0:52:09 And then two, if, if you think that’s like, well, definitionally, you probably don’t think
0:52:11 it’s unlikely going forward.
0:52:12 Hey, you guys.
0:52:13 Yeah, exactly.
0:52:14 We’re going to cry.
0:52:15 I actually thought this was an interview.
0:52:25 Did multi-stage win seed or more seed than, than seed firms win seed?
0:52:29 Obviously there’s, you know, first round SUSE, you know, like lots of great seed firms.
0:52:33 But when you look at the aggregate of, of, of, you know, of winners, do they have a multi-stage
0:52:34 seed or, or not?
0:52:36 That’s what Rompton’s argument is they had a multi-stage seed.
0:52:39 And that’s why he co-invests with multi-stage as a whole strategy.
0:52:42 And then just, you know, past isn’t, you know, isn’t the future necessarily.
0:52:44 What do we think about the future?
0:52:48 So, I mean, I haven’t looked at, I haven’t rigorously analyzed like the 10 billion, $50
0:52:53 billion outcomes for over, over the, the course of SUSE.
0:52:58 I think we’ve invested in like 10 or 12 unicorns roughly, maybe like a third of those or quarter
0:53:01 of those had a series A investor at seed.
0:53:03 Um, and I’m not really counting.
0:53:07 Like sometimes it was like, oh, the series A investor did a 50 K check in the YC round or
0:53:08 something.
0:53:11 I like, I mean, like actually took half the round or more.
0:53:16 Um, so most of them still were seed only or were like seed funds dominated the early
0:53:17 round.
0:53:20 And then they went to multi-stage very quickly after that.
0:53:25 Um, but so in my experience, like, I think there’s a subset of seed where I don’t know if
0:53:29 I’d say multi-stage funds one, but they have like a very strong advantage, right?
0:53:33 Where if it is a founder that previously built a business that exited for a hundred million
0:53:37 and they’re like in the space that they know super well, that’s going to get done at like
0:53:41 40 instead of 20 or 80 instead of 20, uh, post.
0:53:45 And chances are, it’s going to be a multi-stage and not like a boutique seed firm.
0:53:49 Um, so I think for that segment, like what the stage hasn’t won, but I think it’s probably
0:53:52 like the predominant, like the majority of the time they have a big leg up.
0:53:56 I think for the other ones where it’s less obvious, it tends to be much more seed dominated
0:53:58 or seed fund dominated.
0:53:59 Yeah.
