0:00:23 You are the co-founder, the inventor of products that sit on a lot of people’s shelves.

0:00:32 Method soap, Ollie gummies that my kids have every day, Welly band-aids, and then your investor and a whole bunch more.
0:00:39 So you are here and you’re kind of the magic man when it comes to reinventing consumer categories.
0:00:43 So when we did our call before this, we agreed to do two things.
0:00:45 I said, I want to know your playbook.
0:00:46 How do you do this?
0:00:50 How do you go into the category and figure out which product to select and how to disrupt it?
0:00:53 And you have this like four-step process or whatever you outlined to me.
0:01:02 And the other thing is we agreed that we would each bring a couple of ideas of kind of half-baked ideas of brands that we think an entrepreneur could go do.
0:01:04 And we’re going to kind of pitch them back and forth to each other.
0:01:06 We didn’t tell each other beforehand.
0:01:08 And so we’ll see what we came up with.
0:01:08 How does that sound?

0:01:10 That sounds great.
0:01:11 And that is way too kind of an introduction.
0:01:13 So thrilled to be here.
0:01:15 And I’m way too kind.

0:01:18 How big were some of these businesses?
0:01:21 Just so we understand the magnitude here.
0:01:25 They are – they’re both probably getting close to a billion-dollar brands now.
0:01:32 But would you go in and see like even 10 million of soap or vitamins sitting in a warehouse?
0:01:38 That’s what always blows me away of like how many units we actually move of these products in that are sitting in people’s homes today.
0:01:43 And I’ve been looking forward to this because I remember Sam used to host this conference called HustleCon.
0:01:45 And he would invite founders, entrepreneurs to come speak.
0:01:47 I didn’t know your story at all.
0:01:48 I was sitting there in the crowd.
0:01:55 And I remember you got on stage and you talked about how you started Method, how you started Ollie, how you started Welly.
0:01:57 And you had all these little phrases.
0:02:02 You were like – I walked through the aisles and I look for – and I saw just a sea of sameness.
0:02:05 And you had a picture of the soap aisle or the dish soap aisle.
0:02:14 And it was like every single one was green and looked like – you know, green packaging and looked just like an old school, like my mom’s cleaning product.
0:02:17 And then you had this like totally different shape of a bottle.
0:02:19 It was like, you know, blue or purple or whatever.
0:02:20 And it was – and it stood out.
0:02:22 And I remember the way you talked about it.
0:02:34 I really had never thought about how much thought goes into which category to go into, how do you actually bring something fresh and new to the table, and then how do you hustle to get it off the ground.
0:02:35 You had a great talk that day.
0:02:38 And so I know that was like whatever, a decade ago.
0:02:41 But if we can get even close to that, this will be a success from my perspective.
0:02:47 And you said it in passing just now, but Method is, you know, probably a billion-dollar brand now.
0:02:55 Oli Gummies is also – Oli, the vitamin company is also probably half a billion to a billion-dollar brand.
0:02:57 And so that’s pretty amazing.
0:03:02 And I think like one of the other claims to fame is Target loves you, don’t they?
0:03:05 I feel like – somebody told me this, they go, Target loves that guy.
0:03:06 Well, I love Target.
0:03:09 So it’s a mutual love affair.
0:03:13 You’ve like launched brands with them, like even from the start, right?
0:03:14 You have like a kind of a unique relationship with them.
0:03:15 Is that right?
0:03:16 I do.
0:03:24 I mean, what we did back in, oh, God, 2002 when we pitched this idea of designer commodities, like it was at a time where no mass retail will work with startups.
0:03:30 And so through a lot of Hail Mary passes and some good luck, we were able to be the first to kind of go in there.
0:03:33 And it’s just – it’s been an amazing partnership ever since.
0:03:37 So can we do your process before we brainstorm the ideas?
0:03:39 I want to hear the process you outlined.
0:03:41 And I took a couple notes so I can kind of prompt you.
0:03:46 But you basically had told me these four – three or four things that you do when you go in.
0:03:49 Because I was like, you’ve done this not once, not twice, but three times.
0:03:51 And I was like, can I nerd out with you a little bit?
0:03:54 Yeah, and as you can hear, I’m really annoying to go to a grocery store with.
0:03:57 To me, it’s like the Super Bowl of Commerce.
0:04:01 So every time I’m in a mass retail or a grocery store or a drug store, I’m always hunting.
0:04:04 So I came out of – I have a really simple model.
0:04:12 And it was built off of this idea of what I learned in advertising, which is how do you take a really deep consumer insight and translate to great creative execution?
0:04:24 So my kind of core thesis as an entrepreneur is to look for these – like you said, these kind of white spaces where there’s a sea of same mess and it just kind of smells ripe to go in and do different.
0:04:31 And what I do is I look for a cultural shift or a big macro trend that that category has missed.
0:04:36 And then in between that and where the category is, is the business opportunity.
0:04:40 So in the case of Method, there was like two big cultural shifts I found.
0:04:43 One was this idea of lifestyling of the home.
0:04:45 You know, this is back in 2002.
0:04:47 You know, you look at a dish soap more than you use it.
0:04:53 But nobody thought about these products as part of like the emotional connection to your home and, you know, making decorative.
0:04:56 Basically, looking good on your sink.
0:04:59 So like I keep my Method soap next to my faucet.
0:05:01 So just like looking good when it’s on my counter.
0:05:02 Exactly.
0:05:05 Which is – because you look at it more than you actually use it.
0:05:07 So it’s a pretty meaningful part of the experience of buying a dish soap.
0:05:10 At that time, did you see – what else did you see where you’re like,
0:05:11 Oh, that’s new.
0:05:12 That’s new.
0:05:13 But – and then you applied that to dish soap.
0:05:18 So what else were people doing that you – where you noticed the shift before you did it?
0:05:20 Well, it was really in personal care.
0:05:24 And so a lot of like – I always say like I’m a bit of a thief too.
0:05:28 Like I don’t steal from our competition, but I try to steal from as far away as possible.
0:05:30 So in Method, there’s two areas I stole.
0:05:32 I stole from personal care.
0:05:39 So if you looked at the colors, the fragrances, compared to like how home care, which was these like really toxic cleaners at the time.
0:05:43 So I brought a lot of that personal care approach over to home care.
0:05:45 And I also stole from the housewares.
0:05:47 I would always say like I go to a department store.
0:05:51 I’d look at the beauty aisle and then I would look at the housewares aisle up top.
0:05:54 And so we stole like all these beautiful base shapes.
0:05:59 And so we wanted these things to look like little objects of desire, you know, sitting on your camera top.
0:06:07 Okay, so the first thing you said was you look for a cultural shift that’s happening that a category has missed.
0:06:11 So it’s happening and it’s maybe happening elsewhere because what do they say about the future?
0:06:12 The future is here.
0:06:13 It’s just not evenly distributed.
0:06:20 So a shift has started to happen, but maybe it hasn’t hit in the home care aisle yet or hasn’t hit in the –
0:06:21 Oh my God, I could steal that from you.
0:06:22 That’s great.
0:06:23 That’s not an original.
0:06:27 That’s – a bunch of VCs like to say that one.
0:06:30 All right, so that’s the first thing you do.
0:06:35 And are you looking for a new category or are you looking for a preexisting big category?
0:06:36 What do you like to do?
0:06:40 So like some people would say, oh, that’s already done.
0:06:41 It’s already saturated.
0:06:43 I need to go find something that doesn’t exist yet.
0:06:45 And they’re making bets on what doesn’t exist.
0:06:48 And it seems like what you did was you went into things that already existed
0:06:53 and you weren’t scared of the saturation or that it’s already been done for 50 years.
0:06:55 No, that’s right.
0:06:59 I think it’s much easier to make money by creating an iteration off of something that already exists
0:07:05 because then you don’t have to drive all the consumer education to educate and explain something that’s wildly new.
0:07:07 And I was living in London in the 90s.
0:07:11 I was super inspired by Richard Branson, as many entrepreneurs are.
0:07:13 But what I liked about it, he had a model.
0:07:15 And I think that’s what inspired me to create a model.
0:07:17 His model is an entertainment model, right?
0:07:24 So you’d go in these really unsexy industries like airlines and you would apply his entertainment model that he really understood well.
0:07:27 And so I was always inspired by this idea.
0:07:32 And I looked at, you know, if you looked at any successful serial entrepreneur, they typically had a model.
0:07:39 But what I also loved about Richard did is he went into like really well-established categories that were easy to understand and just put his twist on it.
0:07:44 And so that very much became a lot of the way I thought about how I would approach entrepreneurship.
0:07:48 And then you talked about being a thief.
0:07:49 Can you give a couple examples there?
0:07:51 So you said, I go to a big category.
0:07:52 I walk through the aisles.
0:07:54 I look for the sea of sameness.
0:07:56 I look for a culture shift.
0:07:58 Oh, sorry, you told me one other thing that was great.
0:08:04 You go, you said something, you go, have they made it unnecessarily overcomplicated?
0:08:05 And you go, I think they’re hiding something.
0:08:12 There’s an insecurity there if they’ve made this product category feel overcomplicated and that they take themselves.
0:08:14 And another one was taking themselves too seriously.
0:08:16 Can you talk about those two attributes also?
0:08:21 Yeah, so I think any type of category is taking themselves too serious.
0:08:23 As you said, they’re probably hiding something, right?
0:08:24 There’s like an insecurity there.
0:08:29 And so a lot of my model too is going into these categories that are unnecessarily complicated.
0:08:33 Can I really simplify it back, make it easy for the consumer?
0:08:36 And also I love categories that take themselves way too serious.
0:08:41 And so I love to bring almost like an inner child approach into the categories that are great.
0:08:46 So if you look at method, it’s kind of like what a kid would use to clean the kitchen.
0:08:51 If you looked at Ollie, like I got adults to take gummy vitamins, you know, in masses.
0:08:52 That didn’t happen before.
0:09:01 With Welly, I got adults to wear, you know, bandages with patterns and colors on it versus just the nude ones that are supposed to hide away with your skin but never really do.
0:09:07 And, you know, what I try to do with that, the idea of a culture shift.
0:09:16 So if you look, if you look at method, it was both this idea of lifestyle to the home, but also at the time, you know, you were asked to pollute when you clean or use poison to make your home healthier.
0:09:19 So there was this other big macro trend of health and wellness sustainability.
0:09:24 But to your point, you know, it was showing up some categories, but it was yet to show up here.
0:09:31 So it’s really connecting the dots on those trends and bringing it to new spaces that I find is kind of core to my model.
0:09:38 I saw that you said that one of your favorite ways to come up with ideas is to travel abroad.
0:09:40 We had this guy named Kevin Ryan on the podcast.
0:09:44 Kevin has founded this thing called MongoDB, which is like a $30 billion software business.
0:09:50 But very interestingly, he also started Gilt, which is, you know, Gilt Group, the women’s clothing thing.
0:09:53 And he was like, I got the idea for Gilt when I went to France.
0:09:59 And I think I saw this thing called Vivendi, I think it was called, where it was basically like flash sales for clothing.
0:10:02 And so he would, he talked about that as well, of going abroad.
0:10:08 When you go abroad and you like to travel, do you like, are you, are you going on trips just to find ideas?
0:10:09 Yeah, totally.
0:10:16 It’s a, I think by far, for me, it’s where I get my best ideas for a couple reasons.
0:10:19 One, I just think better when I’m in motion.
0:10:26 So, you know, walking retail with a cup of coffee in your hand, those ideas flow better than ever sitting at a desk.
0:10:29 Two, is we do these like trend trips where we also take designers with us.
0:10:36 And so our goal is not only to spot ideas, but translate it immediately into a design idea that we can bring back.
0:10:43 But also when you’re, you’re in a, you know, a foreign country, you’re jet lagged, which means nobody’s bothering you.
0:10:49 I think you see when you’re, when you’re jet lagged too, you look at things a little bit more fuzzier, which could be a good, good thing.
0:10:53 But also it just opens up new pathways where you’re, you’re walking retail where everything is foreign.
0:10:55 You don’t understand the language.
0:11:02 And for me, like trying to connect the dots between seeing what somebody’s doing in one category, could we apply that to another space?
0:11:05 It’s so much easier to do when you’re out of your home market.
0:11:07 So what’s an example?
0:11:08 So where would you go?
0:11:16 And what’s an example of maybe an idea you had while you were on one of these trend trips that turned into like a success with one of your brands?
0:11:20 Yeah, I mean, some of, I think one of my most favorite was, and this was like 20 years ago.
0:11:26 So this was before collaborations became such, you know, a mainstream part of building any brand.
0:11:35 But we got Orla Kiley, who was really known for very expensive handbags and patterns to do a collaboration with us at Target, which as far as I know is the first ever designer collaboration.
0:11:46 And somebody who was known for very expensive items being able to bring those patterns into a product that sold for $3 and was the first time to the Target ever did a designer collaboration, like at that price point.
0:11:49 So that was out of London, was a huge success.
0:11:54 There was a building we saw in Japan that we absolutely loved the way it was skinned.
0:11:56 We turned that into a hand-washed design.
0:11:59 Like the shape of the building, or what do you mean?
0:12:01 Yeah, it was like the texture of the building.
0:12:07 It was in Tokyo and just had this incredible kind of like pillowed texture on the outside of it.
0:12:10 And we turned that as inspiration into a bottle.
0:12:15 And you’re saying that like really simply like, oh, we saw the texture of a building in Tokyo,
0:12:17 and then it turned it into a hand-wash.
0:12:21 Like that doesn’t even – those dots seem really far apart.
0:12:23 Can you describe your actual process?
0:12:26 So you go to Japan, presumably, right?
0:12:28 You’re then going to do what?
0:12:30 You just walk around?
0:12:33 He said the texture of the building.
0:12:35 That’s like when you’re like on drugs.
0:12:38 You’re like, can you feel this building?
0:12:40 Wouldn’t it be great if that was a bottle of soap?
0:12:47 Okay, so I try to design everything like an object because it’s all about creating these
0:12:52 like little objects of desire, especially when you’re doing it in a category like soap that
0:12:54 you have to buy and you’re trying to turn in something you want to buy.
0:12:57 So I look at everything kind of through this idea of it’s an object.
0:12:58 So I looked at a building.
0:13:00 The building looks like an object.
0:13:03 And it was easy for me to think about like, oh, my God, that pattern, that shape, that
0:13:04 texture is amazing.
0:13:12 What if that little object was sitting on a shelf at a store versus in the ground as a
0:13:12 building?
0:13:15 So it’s like trying to look for those types of patterns.
0:13:20 Or the original method bottle was this camping fuel bottle I found in Norway.
0:13:23 And I just love the shoulders on that bottle.
0:13:28 So we translated that into our first ever product because we couldn’t afford a dust for
0:13:28 designer at that point.
0:13:32 So I had to find something we could just riff off of.

0:14:10 You said, my favorite question when I’m doing these trips is, what if this, but for that?
0:14:15 And you said something, you go, you know, I’m trying to take one dot over here and then
0:14:17 say, what if that was connected to this dot over here?
0:14:19 And you said something cool.
0:14:24 You go, the further apart those two things are, the more powerful the potential idea.
0:14:25 Like, it’s not always going to work.
0:14:29 But like, if you just look at your competitors and you say, oh, we could do that too.
0:14:31 That’s not a very powerful idea.
0:14:36 But if you take something from a whole different country or industry or like different genre
0:14:40 and you bring it to your genre, all of a sudden you have something right.
0:14:44 By the way, an example that just came to mind, I got a little kids and the most popular show
0:14:46 right now on Netflix is K-pop Demon Hunters.
0:14:53 And they basically did like K-pop music, but then like kids cartoon, American kids cartoons,
0:14:55 which like wasn’t what people were doing before.
0:14:58 Like you were doing Cocomelons, like a baby singing American nursery rhymes.
0:15:05 And right now the most popular songs for like, you know, five to eight year olds, half the lyrics are in Korean, but they love it.
0:15:06 And it worked.
0:15:11 And they, you know, they connected two different dots that seemed far apart, but it created a pretty powerful idea when it works.
0:15:13 Yeah.
0:15:16 And first of all, you make me really miss being able to watch cartoons with my kids because they’re all older now.
0:15:18 I love that show.
0:15:22 And I think what you’re describing is really, it’s about creating creative tension.
0:15:27 And the more two disparate ideas are that come together, the more creative tension.
0:15:30 So Method was really the first to do eco-chic.
0:15:32 So we brought together high design and deep sustainability.
0:15:35 Those were really two opposing ideas.
0:15:38 But by bringing it together, it created this creative tension.
0:15:46 And also when you have creative tension, you create a deeper experience that also drives much more royalty and people stay within the brand.
0:15:47 So that’s exactly right.
0:15:50 So I try to look for the most two disparate ideas that could come together.
0:15:57 The other part that that unpacks is this idea of finding something that lives at the intersection of familiar and novel.
0:16:00 So if it’s too familiar, right, it lacks complete differentiation.
0:16:06 If it’s too novel, it’s incredibly foreign and it becomes harder to get somebody to try it.
0:16:11 So I look for those ideas that bring together exactly what you just said of this creative tension.
0:16:14 But there’s enough familiarity in it, you can jump into it.
0:16:17 But there’s enough novelty to it that it makes it a new experience.
0:16:21 And, you know, it’s easy to say, but it’s hard to find.
0:16:23 That’s the art form, I think, of finding those intersections.
0:16:34 I’m not sure what percentage of Welly or Method soap you would say was to just the fact that it was a different colored Band-Aid or a different shaped bottle.
0:16:37 But if it’s a high percentage, it’s sort of insane.
0:16:40 That’s sort of, that’s kind of a, that’s kind of a hard, you’re like this.
0:16:44 It’s almost like this seems too easy a little bit, right?
0:16:53 The more I try to innovate, the less successful I’ve been where I’ve moved more into that space of being too novel.
0:16:56 I think I feel more times by being too novel than being too familiar.
0:17:00 Like we launched the most amazing laundry detergent years ago.
0:17:02 It was 10X concentrated.
0:17:06 So it was the size of a shampoo bottle for 50 loads of laundry.
0:17:16 But because it was so small, this was an idea I got out of Japan too, where I saw they had bigger laundry detergent, but they would use these almost like the X mouthwash where you squeeze it, pre-measures it.
0:17:20 But we turn it into where you just pump it, a pre-measure dose.
0:17:31 But it was so hard to get consumers to believe that something so small could be so effective because they’ve been trained forever that, you know, a giant jug of laundry detergent is what you need to get your clothes cleaned.
0:17:36 But yeah, I’ve always usually over-innovated when I fail, then under-innovated.
0:17:41 I think I saw a quote with you and Simon Sinek on his podcast.
0:17:43 He said, if it’s hard, it’s probably wrong.
0:17:47 And then he said, I know I have a good idea when I can’t believe others aren’t doing it.
0:18:06 And I think that when a lot of entrepreneurs want to grow their companies or start a new company, I know I fall victim to this all the time, I somehow think that there’s a correlation between, this sounds controversial, but there’s a correlation between how hard I work or how hard something is and how much value a customer will get or how valuable my business can get.
0:18:17 Yeah, there’s kind of this golden rule, and this came out of a lot of apparel and fashion, which is if you change one thing, like if you do, you know, one iteration off of the core, you have a higher probability.
0:18:23 The second you change two or three things, you’re most likely going to fail.
0:18:27 It’s almost like an advertising we used to say, if you throw a consumer an egg, they’re going to catch it.
0:18:35 If you throw them two or three eggs, their chances are they’re going to drop it because you’re throwing too much change at them too fast, whether that’s communication or a product.
0:18:49 But also I think it’s such a, we live in such a surplus world, right, of like endless ideas and choices that I think it creates this pressure to really sometimes over-innovate to be too different.
0:18:57 And to your point of like, if it seems so obvious, then I would always get tripped up of like, well, why has nobody done this before if it’s this obvious to me?
0:18:59 That’s a really good insight.
0:19:02 That’s a really good insight about the, you know, just change one thing.
0:19:12 Do you think that that applies across software companies or internet companies, or is that just commerce or fashion, like things that are more consumable and that I touch and feel and wear?
0:19:25 I think it applies to everything, whether you’re launching, I mean, even if you’re, you know, within a B2B business, arguably you’re just as distracted as a consumer as you are when you’re, you know, I think, I guess a real consumer.
0:19:40 And I don’t know that world as well, but I would imagine, again, just creating simple iterations off of a successful model is way more likely to succeed than trying to create something radically new from scratch.
0:19:48 Or when something radically new from scratch has started, I mean, think about like in the social space of, you know, MySpace, Friends, sir, it was really the third that got it right.
0:19:51 But it’s just kind of simple iterations off of that first model.
0:20:01 I did a call the other day with an AI company that’s raised a ton of money and they have this huge valuation, close to basically a billion dollar valuation.
0:20:06 And they initially grew because in AI, AI is so hot.
0:20:10 There’s so much attention that people were willing to try a bunch of things.
0:20:12 But now they’re like, hey, how do we grow from here?
0:20:14 So they’re like, hey, really respect your growth ideas.
0:20:15 We want to do a growth session.
0:20:20 I was like, I don’t know, guys, it’s not really my, you know, like, I don’t know if I can solve your problem, but cool, I’ll jump on a call.
0:20:25 And we get on the call and they start telling me all about this, all the stuff.
0:20:30 And I just kept asking the same question and I was like, cool, so why would somebody choose to use you?
0:20:30 Like, why?
0:20:34 Because most people today are using tool A, you want them to switch to tool B.
0:20:36 And I was like, awesome.
0:20:38 So like, why is tool B better than tool A?
0:20:43 And then they were like, oh, it’s way better, like in all these other, all these different ways.
0:20:43 I was like, awesome.
0:20:47 So just like, tell me the one that like is the biggest one that would immediately convince me.
0:20:52 And they were like, well, well, there’s not really like one.
0:20:53 And I was like, cool.
0:20:54 Okay, so let’s say there’s three.
0:20:56 Just tell me one of them first.
0:21:00 They were so focused on we’re better that they forgot to say we’re different.
0:21:01 Like, how are you better?
0:21:03 And like, they were trying to throw four eggs.
0:21:07 And I was like, none of those eggs were very convincing and they all just cracked on me, right?
0:21:14 And I wish they had just thrown me one egg that said, listen, for this type of person, here’s the problem with the tools that you’re currently using.
0:21:15 And we can, we do it this way instead.
0:21:18 And I say, you know, that that would resonate.
0:21:19 That would be obviously the ideal scenario.
0:21:23 So I definitely think this applies to not just consumer products.
0:21:25 The only way I think that comes from is just pure ego.
0:21:29 I think a lot of entrepreneurs, like their ego gets in the way.
0:21:35 And so they want, they almost intentionally overcomplicate it to show how special the product is, therefore how special they are.
0:21:41 And the best entrepreneurs I’ve always met are the ones who take incredibly complex ideas and simplify it down.
0:21:45 And then it’s easy for consumers to get it, for their teams to execute.
0:21:52 And I think that art form of simplification is the biggest hack in entrepreneurship.
0:22:00 And yeah, the number of pitches I sit through and like, I’m like, you’re intentionally overcomplicating this to justify evaluation or justify your specialness.
0:22:04 I think it is ego, but there is something strange.
0:22:13 I think that like, it’s easy for you to think this because you’ve done it so many times, but there is something strange where it’s like, wait, so if I just change the color of the band-aids, it’s going to win.
0:22:16 And that’s obviously, you’ve done, you’ve done a lot more than that.
0:22:23 But like within my company, I run, within my company with my employees, they’ll be like, we have to do this, this, this, or this.
0:22:29 I’m like, but what if we just like, don’t do any of that and just make better ads or, you know, like you just like, just do one thing.
0:22:36 But for some reason, that’s hard to conceptualize that like just a minor change on one thing can create a significant amount of value.
0:22:44 Because you think to yourself, I have to work $1 billion worth of work or put $1 billion worth of effort in order to have a $1 billion idea.
0:22:47 But it’s oftentimes, it’s not the reality.
0:22:50 Well, can we do an example here with, you talked a little bit about method.

0:22:53 Maybe it’s because I take it every day.
0:22:54 Maybe my kids take it.
0:22:55 So it’s like very like in my life.
0:22:58 And you went into the vitamins category.
0:23:00 So let’s imagine, let’s take you back.
0:23:01 I don’t know what year this was.
0:23:02 You walked into the vitamins category.
0:23:08 You’re looking there and you see, you know, a bunch of sort of nature made type of looking things.
0:23:12 You got maybe Flintstone vitamins, you’re still hanging on for dear life.
0:23:14 And you saw an opportunity.
0:23:17 I just want to give you one prompt, which is he said something on the pre-call that was hilarious, Sam.
0:23:20 He goes, I went into the aisle and I saw, okay, cool.
0:23:22 You know, first thing I observed, all of them around.
0:23:24 So I thought, okay, I guess we’re going to have a square packaging.
0:23:30 And I just thought that’s literally the funniest, like the funniest way of like, well, I guess that’s that then.
0:23:32 Everybody’s around, so we must be square.
0:23:33 If everybody was square, then we would have been round.
0:23:34 Like it’s as simple as that.
0:23:36 And there was no focus groups.
0:23:38 There was no, it was like, yeah, okay.
0:23:40 They’re all, they’re all round.
0:23:41 So we had no choice but to be square.
0:23:42 That’s awesome.
0:23:48 And the other thing I remember was vitamins used to be like a game of inference.
0:23:53 So you would, it would say, you know, whatever, vitamin D, but you don’t know what vitamin D does, right?
0:24:00 You’d have to then know what is the purpose of vitamin D or what is the purpose of melatonin or what is the purpose of, I don’t know, whatever the thing that puts you to sleep.
0:24:04 But you guys just wrote sleep and you wrote like, you know, immunity, right?
0:24:07 Like you just wrote the benefit instead of the feature.
0:24:11 And I was like, oh, that was also quite simple of a change to make.
0:24:13 Can you talk about, take us back.
0:24:16 You go, you walk into that aisle or I don’t know how it actually started, but.
0:24:16 Yeah.
0:24:21 So I, we’d, I’d sold method, but I still involved.
0:24:27 And I, I, first of all, like I had, for the first time I like, I’m pretty optimistic, happy by default person.
0:24:30 But for the first time in my life, I felt a little royalist because I was like, I’m an entrepreneur.
0:24:33 And suddenly I was, did not feel like an entrepreneur anymore.
0:24:34 I was working for somebody else.
0:24:40 And I was also doing a project for, for Target to create what we call made to matter.
0:24:44 And the, and the goal was to get them to have credit for having all these natural brands.
0:24:53 And so we were looking for these brands that connected with millennial moms and we couldn’t find any, we couldn’t find one for the vitamin category.
0:24:55 So I just went and literally walked the aisle.
0:24:59 And first thing I noticed was people stressing out, trying to choose something that was healthy for them.
0:25:02 Since I think I was studying the aisle, people assumed maybe I knew what I was doing.
0:25:06 And so like people would just randomly ask me like, do you know what magnesium is for?
0:25:08 They thought you worked there?
0:25:10 It was, they were just like.
0:25:12 Standing here, staring at us.
0:25:14 Just lost people in that aisle.
0:25:17 And it was a dog’s breakfast.
0:25:18 It was really hard to shop.
0:25:19 The brands were super inspiring.
0:25:21 The packaging was terrible.
0:25:22 So that was the clue dig here.
0:25:29 And so the first thing I tried to figure out was like, all right, what is, you know, kind of going back, what is that big cultural shift this category is missing?
0:25:35 And what I figured it out was, it was really millennials view health and wellness as a lifestyle pursuit.
0:25:43 And the clue for me and kind of what you said earlier of like, you start seeing these trends in one area, the clue was really soul cycle.
0:25:51 And the way that soul cycle had repositioned fitness into something that was almost spiritual.
0:25:55 But I love the branding of soul cycle, the name, the whole identity.
0:25:59 And so my inspiration a little was like, all right, what would the soul cycle of vitamins look like?
0:26:03 And if we reimagine a vitamin as a lifestyle product.
0:26:06 So then to your point, it’s like, all right, well, it’s got to be a square pack.
0:26:13 And then I always want to design everything to have like a, so again, it’s really designed as a product, not a package.
0:26:17 So I wanted to design it like a jar, something you would want to leave out.
0:26:20 Because if you left it out, you most likely remember to keep taking it.
0:26:23 But also like it actually had like intrinsic value.
0:26:27 And then I realized, okay, well, we have to put a giant cap on it.
0:26:28 So we might as well make the cap the logo.
0:26:35 So then the whole idea, and this flowed really within a matter of probably days, the idea that it would be a square jar with a white cap.
0:26:37 And that’s what would make it iconic.
0:26:43 And then it just started quickly flowing from there of like, well, everybody else is selling like, why sell biotin?
0:26:46 Why not just sell beauty?
0:26:47 Why sell melatonin?
0:26:48 Why not sell sleep?
0:26:49 And do these really unique blends.
0:26:55 And again, it was all the spirit of really making this thing easier to understand.
0:27:03 But almost, you know, again, turning a vitamin into something you have to buy, into something you want to buy, in this little like object of desire.

0:27:59 So you, but you know, all entrepreneurs, they’re typically not like the best in the world at a single thing.
0:28:02 But they’re like pretty damn good at a couple of unrelated things.
0:28:06 So, you know, maybe there’s better designers than you or product designers than you.
0:28:14 But you also have the entrepreneurial hustle to be like, I’m going to go now stand outside of this natural grocery store and pass out samples.
0:28:22 Or I’m going to go do a thing that’s like, I’m going to keep showing up in some way that like other people would have given up five days ago.
0:28:22 But I was still here.
0:28:24 And that was the thing that gave me the break.
0:28:30 You know, you’re top 20% in two different things rather than being top 1% or top 0.1% in a single category.
0:28:31 I’m just assuming that.
0:28:32 Is that true?
0:28:37 And are there any stories of the hustle that it took to get into the stores actually, get the momentum?
0:28:38 Yeah, super true.
0:28:38 It is funny.
0:28:41 It’s like I, as an entrepreneur, I think a lot about energy flow.
0:28:45 And when I’m working on something, if it’s giving me energy back, then I know it’s right.
0:28:48 And to your earlier comment of if it’s hard, it’s wrong.
0:28:49 That’s a lot of the way.
0:28:52 And I’m working on a concept right now that I’ve literally been pushing water uphill.
0:28:57 It’s been painful as far as trying to, but last week it broke.
0:28:59 I’m like, oh, there it is.
0:29:00 Now it’s flowing.
0:29:03 Like I can’t stop working on it right now because it’s energy giving.
0:29:04 It’s flowing.
0:29:06 The narrative is like beautifully coming together.
0:29:08 Each insight’s unlocking the next.
0:29:13 But in that case, like I had to push water uphill for like the last six months on this concept,
0:29:18 trying to get it to a place where suddenly like I can see it now.
0:29:20 And then hopefully other people will see it.
0:29:24 But to your point of execution, like at the end of the day, like ideas are easy.
0:29:25 Like execution is the hard part.
0:29:30 So with Method, I think that was where we had, because we had, you know,
0:29:34 Adam and I were two guys in a dirty flat in San Francisco with like zero, you know,
0:29:36 zero experience on how to make or sell anything.
0:29:42 And I think where that persistence really paid off is we had to sell it into these, you know,
0:29:45 local San Francisco grocery stores where the manager made the decision.
0:29:47 So we would just show up at 6 a.m.
0:29:51 And like, you know, we’re a grumpy manager and you got, you know, quickly, you’ve got literally
0:29:57 three minutes to like pitch your idea for this new premium cleaning brand.
0:30:01 And I realized a lot of ways selling was just really this transfer of emotion.
0:30:06 Like I don’t think he ever believed in the product that we’re selling, but you got to get him to believe in you.
0:30:12 And in some cases believe that you’re going to keep showing up until he says yes to that persistence.
0:30:19 But it’s really that emotion, that energy that’s contagious and it’s finding it first in what you’re building that you love.
0:30:25 So then you can share that with other people and have the energy to keep going when things get hard, which of course they will.
0:30:28 Do you look at a company like a project?
0:30:32 Like this is my art project and I’m going to jump from thing to thing to thing.
0:30:33 Do you acknowledge it?
0:30:35 Or are you more of a, are you more operational?
0:30:38 I, I both, I’m a project guy at heart.
0:30:46 I love the start, middle and finish of creating something, but also to build great companies, the operating side of it is so important.
0:30:51 The kind of my kind of core philosophy of building companies is this idea of artisan operators.
0:31:03 So I want to build companies that have incredible imagination, creativity that can innovate, but also run a really good predictable business with great supply chain, finance controls and doing both.
0:31:11 Like if you think about it, there’s so few companies in the world, Apple, Nike, that do both really, really well at scale.
0:31:16 And so I try to build teams and cultures that have this idea of being great artisan operators.
0:31:30 But I do, you know, at the heart of it, I do love, you know, I heard Tim Kugel, who was on my board, say once he referred to Yahoo as a project, you know, which he started as employee number six, the CEO, scaled it through an IPO and beyond.
0:31:34 And when he referred to Yahoo as a project, I thought that was pretty cool.
0:31:45 Do you have like an open, an open check from Unilever or Target and they’re just like, whatever you got going on, get after it and come see us in two or three years and we’ll look at the traction and we’ll just buy your company.
0:31:49 I wish it was that easy, but no.
0:31:53 So said the guy like in his chair with a cat on his arm, right?
0:31:56 I mean, we’ve had a lot of success.
0:31:58 We’ve had a lot of failures as well.
0:32:03 It always, like every one of them is hard and hard in their own way.
0:32:03 I do.
0:32:04 So I’m moving over.
0:32:08 I joined Great Croft and we’re launching a new Great Croft Consumer Brands Fund.
0:32:11 So I’m moving into the VC space.
0:32:24 And kind of what you’re talking about too, it’s, I realized like my superpower of working with entrepreneurs is to, to, to help infuse them in energy because, you know, I’ve sat in their shoes so many times and understand how hard it is.
0:32:33 And so I love now not being the quarterback on the field, always throwing the passes, but actually being the coach on the sidelines and like coaching these, these young founders.
0:32:37 And it’s, it’s just a thrill to do that now.
0:32:39 You told me something kind of amazing.
0:32:49 You said that you went on your trend trips, let’s say to Tokyo or wherever you’re going, and you took some people from Target with you during this kind of like brainstorming phase.
0:32:53 But you had this, this system that was kind of like going to wow them.
0:32:57 Can you tell this story about how you, the 24 hour cycle that you had that would like wow them?
0:32:58 Yeah.
0:33:02 I mean, a lot of people, you know, trend trips are quite common within consumer, especially among retailers.
0:33:10 The problem is you come back with all these amazing photos and then you’re buried in your inbox and meetings you’ve missed and usually it goes nowhere.
0:33:18 So the process that we found worked really well is we’d kick off every trend trip with like, okay, here, you know, ground ourselves.
0:33:19 These are the big macro trends.
0:33:28 And then we’d hire somebody on the ground where for Asia or Europe and we would go to all of like the most influential retail that was occurring in that market.
0:33:32 But everybody had almost like a scavenger hunt.
0:33:33 You had an assignment.
0:33:43 By the time we got to that pub at five o’clock to sit down for a happy hour, everybody had to have multiple ideas that they were excited about while being in the field.
0:33:44 And then we would talk about it.
0:33:45 We would pick a couple.
0:33:51 And then as we’re going to dinner, I would call it into our creative team who’s sitting in San Francisco where it’s morning.
0:33:56 And then they would have all day to work on the brief that we just gave them.
0:33:58 They would send it at the end of their day.
0:34:03 We would wake up and then at breakfast we would present like what looked like polished products ideas to Target.
0:34:08 And so by the time we got on that plane to go home, we actually had sold in new products.
0:34:11 That’s like how South Park makes an episode.
0:34:12 Have you guys seen that?
0:34:18 Where like Matt and Trey will like write all day and then they’ll like send it to their Korean editor editing team.
0:34:20 And then the next morning they’re like, oh, cool.

0:34:30 So we do a thing where whenever we have a guest on or like especially when we do them in person, we will bring a gift.

0:34:40 Like what makes a great experience when you are with somebody?
0:34:41 I think giving a gift is a nice thing, right?

0:34:48 And Jimmy was talking about his experience on the show.
0:34:50 He goes, you guys do this incredible thing.
0:34:51 I did the podcast with you.
0:34:57 And when we got up and the episode was done, somebody from your team came and handed me this book.
0:35:02 And it’s a photo book of printed photos from the podcast that they were just doing like moments earlier.
0:35:05 And he was like, I’ve never seen anything like this.
0:35:08 And this guy’s been doing TV production with Hollywood stars for years.
0:35:13 But like creating, like going a little bit extra to create a wow.
0:35:17 And in that case, it’s the speed of the turnaround, similar to what you were saying with your, the speed of the turnaround.
0:35:23 I’m sure a lot of people will come up with mock-ups or product ideas two weeks later at a follow-up meeting.
0:35:26 But the emotion’s gone and the wow factor is gone at that point.
0:35:34 Doing it in the 24-hour cycle is that little extra, that entrepreneurial juice that like I think most people wouldn’t even think to go.
0:35:38 They wouldn’t, they would think that’s, that’s, there’s an invisible fence that you can’t do that.
0:35:45 Well, it’s like living in that state of make and also I love that line by Steve Jobs of I trust people, just not in groups.
0:35:55 And so it allows you to keep a really small team that’s agile, that isn’t overthinking things and just living in that state of make.
0:36:06 And that’s, that’s where magic and I’m, I’m such a huge student of SNL and how Saturday Night Live, their entire creative process, any, any of the former actors on it that’s written an autobiography I’ve listened to.
0:36:12 Like, I think I know it by heart now of like what they do Tuesday morning through, but there is something so powerful about being in that state of make.
0:36:19 And now that we have between AI and digital tools, where we can build and make things in such real time, I think it’s even more powerful.
0:36:25 And it’s also where you see real talent versus people who, who don’t know how to actually do anything.
0:36:26 They know how to manage.
0:36:31 And so it’s a place where like builders and doers really thrive and managers kind of just get in the way.
0:36:35 I don’t, I don’t, I don’t know if we should do it right now, which maybe have a part two,
0:36:36 but it would actually be awesome.
0:36:43 I never realized for like, you know, Sean has an econ brand and for all the people who are in the, in the more physical space,
0:36:46 it would be really fun to see how you use AI to ideate.

0:37:11 I basically said, outline your method and then let’s use the method to try to come up with some ideas, which I think is fun.

0:37:16 Because how many podcasts would actually try that?
0:37:21 Okay. So you just to outline your, your process was find a big category, ideally an already big category.
0:37:24 So you don’t have to educate the consumer about something new that I haven’t thought about buying.
0:37:29 You want to find a sea of sameness where everybody’s kind of doing the same thing.
0:37:33 You want to look if there’s a cultural shift elsewhere that hasn’t applied to this category.
0:37:35 Ideally, it’s something that’s overly complicated.
0:37:37 They’re taking themselves too seriously.
0:37:40 Then to crumb up with your idea, you’d be a thief.
0:37:41 You find unrelated things.
0:37:43 You say, what if we did that over here?
0:37:46 And you’re trying to come up with a single stroke that cuts through the noise.
0:37:50 That might be your packaging or your, your colors, your positioning, whatever it may be.
0:37:52 The square bottle when everybody else is round.
0:37:54 And then you got to hustle to get the momentum going.

0:37:58 So I came up with a couple of half, I’m calling these half-baked ideas.
0:38:01 I don’t think they’re, I think one might be good, but the others are, are, are pretty tough.

0:38:39 And so when I see my parents, I’m seeing a future window into what I might look like or
0:38:42 things that they prioritize that I don’t really think about today.
0:38:44 And my mom was just over at my house.
0:38:48 And one thing my mom takes religiously is fiber.
0:38:50 She drinks fiber every single day.
0:38:54 And I’ve, you know, I’m in a world where I hear about gut health and microbiome and fancy
0:38:57 stuff, but she’s like, I need to take this to poop.
0:38:58 Okay.
0:38:59 So that’s what I’m going to do.
0:39:00 And I need to take this to poop.
0:39:01 You got that.
0:39:02 I’m like, yeah, that’s simple enough.
0:39:06 And so then I looked, I looked at the brands that she’s using and I walked through the aisle.
0:39:11 So preparing for this podcast, I went to the grocery store and I walked through and I see
0:39:13 Metamucil, which to me sounds like a disease.
0:39:18 I see Benefiber, which sounds like an Obamacare, you know, spinoff.
0:39:23 And I just thought the brand, the leading brands in the fiber category, I think are completely
0:39:27 outdated, but I do think that there’s something familiar about fiber.
0:39:30 So like I get pitched a lot of products that I don’t really know if they’ll work or not.
0:39:34 But if somebody said, Hey, this increases the fiber in your diet, I would personally have
0:39:36 pretty high conviction that that’s like good for me.
0:39:39 I just don’t want to take a grandma product, right?
0:39:44 Because that’s not really, that wouldn’t, I would feel unhealthy taking the product.
0:39:50 So I want a fiber brand that I feel like I’m in the same way when I take, you know, protein
0:39:54 or amino acids or something or something that’s like, yeah, I’m at, I’m trying to be peak
0:39:55 performance right now.
0:39:57 And so I want to reinvent the fiber category.
0:39:59 That’s the point of view.
0:40:04 And I have an idea for how to do that, which is to get out of this kind of grandma product
0:40:06 category and do a fresh take on fiber.
0:40:09 Sharks, where do you, where does that land with you?
0:40:10 Well, let’s start with the space.
0:40:15 Cause it’s, if it’s the wrong category, then there’s, it’s pointless to go any further.
0:40:17 I think he found great white space.
0:40:18 Like I agree.
0:40:25 Fiber is the new protein as protein gets more and more saturated in the record.
0:40:30 You know, we’re, we’re seeing huge growth across all, all areas of higher fiber.
0:40:36 If you, the place I would look is if you walk Costco and what fiber products are available
0:40:41 there and you’re right, it’s the legacy brands and nobody’s really put a fresh spin on it.
0:40:42 You could do it.
0:40:43 Like, where would you steal from?
0:40:50 I would steal from juice bars of like that wellness, appetite appeal, like a green, like
0:40:55 what is a green juice, a modern green juice look like as a fiber product.
0:40:58 And then you can innovate on flavors around it.
0:41:02 And the other thing is it’s a really great margin category.
0:41:03 Right.
0:41:07 We, uh, I have this friend, do you guys know what Kegel exercises are for men?
0:41:09 I don’t know how to do it.
0:41:13 You’re supposed to like squeeze something inside, but like, so like women have, women have,
0:41:16 women, anyone, the few women who listen to this, they know what that is.
0:41:23 But for men, yeah, for, for the men, people apparently do Kegel exercises.
0:41:25 So don’t like premature ejaculate basically during sex.
0:41:30 I think that’s the main thing, but they’re, but I have a, I’ve got a buddy who made a, that’s
0:41:31 commitment by the way.
0:41:32 Well, I’ve got, yeah, yeah.
0:41:34 Like you must, you really need it.
0:41:40 And I have a friend who created a Kegel exercise app for men and he was like promoting this.
0:41:45 And I was like, man, I see why young or any man wants this.
0:41:46 That’s great.
0:41:49 It sounds like you’re doing great for the world, but my honor costs too much.
0:41:52 I don’t want to be an influencer or a promoter for this.
0:41:57 And I wonder if there’s like a little bit with fiber where it’s like, I don’t know if I want to
0:41:59 talk about like, you know, pooping more.
0:42:02 So I did think about this and I have two, two possible angles.
0:42:05 We either lean in or we swerve out.
0:42:05 Okay.
0:42:06 Lean in.
0:42:06 Here’s the lean in path.
0:42:13 The lean in path is going to be, look, poop is, you know, poops, poops, poop.
0:42:14 It’s kind of could be funny.
0:42:18 And so I actually pitched this to our friend who came on the podcast, Hassan Minhaj.
0:42:20 I said, Hassan, I got a product for you.
0:42:24 Cause I was like, this guy’s so funny that like his ad creative would be like, would perform
0:42:26 better than anybody else’s ad creative.
0:42:31 And it’s almost like, you know, any celebrity who hawks a product, there’s a little bit of
0:42:31 sellout nature.
0:42:39 And so it’s almost funny to sell out for something that’s like, so, like so clearly silly.
0:42:41 And in that way that it might actually work for him.
0:42:46 Like he’s gets a license to like promote the product because it’s kind of a silly product.
0:42:51 So one, I, one way is to lean in and actually have a comedian who you kind of have as a face
0:42:53 of the brand that actually leans into the fun of it.
0:42:58 You can be the dude, the dude wipes so well executed leaned into that, to the use case.
0:42:58 All right.
0:43:01 So then there’s the swerve out path, which was, you’re right.
0:43:06 Maybe it’s not about, maybe it’s not about, uh, maybe the framing is a little more on metabolism
0:43:07 or digestion.
0:43:09 Like you, you may, can you work, can you use a different word?
0:43:11 Cause I don’t know anybody that wants worse metabolism.
0:43:11 Yeah.
0:43:13 Like cleaner system.
0:43:18 And I’ve never heard really of that many products that like talk about like this, this improves
0:43:18 your metabolism.

0:43:24 And so you get away from the sort of like the, the lower intestine area and you, you sort
0:43:28 of like, you move up towards more like the stomach and you get a little way from the gross
0:43:29 stuff and you talk about metabolism.
0:43:30 So those are my two ideas.

0:45:25 And in a world where more and more, I think we’ll see a backlash to AI of understanding what
0:45:26 is real and what is not.
0:45:31 We’re going to want these places of human connection and just deep authenticity.
0:45:35 And there’s also no better place than to really start your day.
0:45:39 So my pitch is, I’m going to go back to SoulCycle again.
0:45:41 I would create the SoulCycle of the diner.
0:45:44 It would only be open from morning through lunch.
0:45:46 So it’s one shift.
0:45:48 So it’s a really good academic model.
0:45:53 But when you walk into it, it feels incredibly vibrant.
0:45:58 So I would do probably like, the entire thing would feel almost like a modern barn of like

0:46:05 I would have a standalone grab-and-go juice bar, coffee bar.
0:46:11 But the rest of the restaurant would be how a diner is set up where it’s all stool bar

0:46:17 But I would have it so it moves throughout, you know, so the counter, there’s no separate

0:46:22 The counter kind of flows so you can get everybody around the counter for that communal.
0:46:26 But also, so it’s really efficient for the staff too to move through it.
0:46:29 And then when you pop it at 7 a.m., like it’s bopping.

0:46:37 It’s just a place you would want to start every morning with that level of optimism.
0:46:42 So the seating is kind of like those sushi bars where they wrap around like,

0:50:08 And so I just wonder if with the diner, you could do one thing, which is like eliminate

0:53:19 So what I tried to do is reinvent the American jewelry store.
0:53:24 And my theory was, I always wanted to do retail where I could, you know, geek out on every
0:53:26 expression from a playlist to the sense, which we did.
0:53:29 And even the way you’re greeted.
0:53:34 And I’m a huge student of like Danny Meyer, the way he thinks about at each restaurant,
0:53:35 like 15 seconds, right?
0:53:35 To be greeted.
0:53:38 And even the service manual of where does the salt and pepper go?
0:53:40 And how do you think every, every detail through?
0:53:45 But when you walk into a jewelry store, I found it to be like the most intimidating experience.
0:53:47 Like you never felt like he belonged there.
0:53:50 You had to like ask for the world’s smallest price tag to be turned over.
0:53:55 And then you have to give a reaction to something you thought was 5,000, but it’s actually 50,000.
0:54:00 And the insight there was women’s self-purchasing is driving growth and fine jewelry, but nobody
0:54:02 was really creating a experience for them.
0:54:04 So we created this brand called Cast.
0:54:07 We opened up three stores in the Bay Area.
0:54:12 And I wanted like, you know, Willy Wonka, pure imagination to play in a consumer’s head when
0:54:15 they walked in and feel like a kid in a candy store again.
0:54:22 But again, being able to sign leases, build out stores, omni-channel, we had an incredible
0:54:26 partnership with Nordstrom who put capital in the business, but it was so capital intensive
0:54:33 that a path to profitability and then raising capital in this market was just incredibly,
0:54:34 incredibly difficult.
0:54:37 So that’s where those, when those situations you’re like, all right, I’m sitting at the
0:54:41 wrong, Tony Hsieh would say, sometimes you got to move poker tables and just, I’m at
0:54:42 the wrong table.
0:54:46 And, you know, gold pricing was spiking, diamond pricing was crashing.
0:54:51 You couldn’t sign a lease in these A-class because LVMate should eat up so much of these
0:54:52 leases.
0:54:56 So I realized like, it was just back to like, if it’s hard, it’s wrong.
0:54:58 It was a hard business to build.
0:55:01 How long did you work on it until you were like, all right, it’s dead?
0:55:08 I worked on it from launch to, it’s dead, yeah, three, three to four years.
0:55:09 Oh, a lot.

0:55:12 No, we worked hard at it.
0:55:16 It was a fun business, like designing jewelry and our team, you know, incredible culture,

0:55:27 We had a, you know, we had a profound mark on the industry in a very short amount of time,
0:55:32 but it just was a business that nobody wants to put capital into, unfortunately.

0:55:35 It’s not like the easiest pitch at the moment.

1:04:20 And then this Vital Farms thing on top, because they literally draw, like, flowers and, like, you know, hay or whatever on the thing.
1:04:22 I’m, like, oh, farm.

1:04:27 Now that he says sea of sameness, I’m, like, oh, I do this all the time.
1:04:33 Like, the other day, I bought yogurt the other day because instead of Greek yogurt, this yogurt was Icelandic.

1:04:36 Like, I don’t know.
1:04:37 You guys do know what that means, but I’m in.
1:04:38 Yeah.
1:04:38 Yeah.
1:04:42 I was, like, for some reason, it’s all Greek, and this is from Iceland.
1:04:44 And do you have a theory on naming?
1:04:47 Because, like, you’ve named your products extremely well.
1:04:47 Yes.
1:04:49 How do you come up with names?
1:04:56 So, the holy grail of naming is one word, four letters, if you could do it.
1:04:58 Well, really, really hard.
1:05:02 Naming a brand is the most difficult part of a startup because everything is taken.
1:05:04 Do you use, like, an agency?
1:05:06 Do you just sit there and think?
1:05:07 It’s all different.
1:05:10 I’m not good at naming, but I’m good at spotting a name.
1:05:12 So, method was, Adam was literally my co-founder.
1:05:14 We were literally brushing our teeth at the same time.
1:05:16 And he’s, like, what about method?
1:05:17 I was, like, that’s it.
1:05:19 Lawyer’s, like, you’re never going to get method.
1:05:20 It’s, like, way too generic.
1:05:24 Then I asked my lawyer, while he wasn’t working over drinks, I was, like, if you thought this
1:05:27 meme was really important to your success, what would you do?
1:05:28 He’s, like, hey, I’d go for it.
1:05:31 I was, like, where’s – because lawyers never want to be wrong, but they don’t need to be
1:05:32 right.
1:05:38 Oli came from – I was working with Alan Dye, who was helping me, who’s creative director
1:05:39 at Apple.
1:05:42 And we came up with Oli Slate, like, Oli for friendly.
1:05:46 I wanted the name – with each case, I come up with a jumping off word.
1:05:48 So, for method, I wanted to represent technique, right?
1:05:53 So, if you’re in the gym, you use good technique to get force, because this was going to clean
1:05:54 without force.
1:05:56 So, I was, like, we want something that represents technique.
1:05:57 And he’s, like, how about method?
1:05:58 I was, like, that’s it.
1:06:07 With Oli, everything in the category was pseudoscience, like Centrum, or was very folksy,
1:06:09 like nature’s garden or bounty.
1:06:11 So, I wanted a name that just sounded friendly.
1:06:15 So, he came up with Oli Slate, and then we realized Oli would just – we were able to
1:06:18 get it on its own, so we didn’t need the slate part of it.
1:06:22 You’re, like, ripping through the story, and it’s, like, insight, insight, insight.
1:06:25 And, like, you make it – you have what I call the knowledge, like, the curse of knowledge,
1:06:30 which is, you think that this is – you’re, like, oh, yeah, I just did this, and then
1:06:31 I just did that.
1:06:32 Like, I don’t think –
1:06:35 You didn’t even tell us that, and that was so interesting.
1:06:36 And what if we hadn’t asked the question?
1:06:38 We wouldn’t have known that.
1:06:39 Like, how many more of those you got?
1:06:41 It’s, like, you’re, like, oh, well, I just do this.
1:06:46 Of course, as one does, you pick a jump off word, and then you – it’s, like, oh, I don’t
1:06:47 do anything like that.
1:06:48 I just look for things like mine.
1:06:51 But, like, you know someone’s a master when they’re fluid.
1:06:56 They’re fluid with this, and it’s incredibly clear when you describe the simplest things
1:06:57 that you are a master.
1:06:59 What was the jumping off word for Welly?
1:07:04 So, for Welly was – I wanted something about healthcare.
1:07:07 And so, we actually came up with Nightingale.
1:07:11 So, Nightingale, because of the idea of, like, Nightingale is, like, she is, like, this icon,
1:07:18 and it’s all about caring for you, and Anthony Spardutti and Partners in Spade came up with
1:07:18 Welly.
1:07:21 And I was, like, done.
1:07:25 Most – every time I’ve never – every name, like, cast we came up with for jewelry.
1:07:30 Again, each time we – I saw the name.
1:07:31 It was, like, no debate.
1:07:32 It was, like, that is it.
1:07:33 And then it’s all hands-on.
1:07:34 How do we secure this name?
1:07:34 Amazing.
1:07:36 Do you have another idea?
1:07:42 One of my favorite foods, and I watched my kids go through it, is packaged cheese.
1:07:46 So, I think Kraft Singles, mozzarella sticks.
1:07:54 I have never seen anybody do anything really – so, there’s this big delta in cheese, too.
1:07:58 You go to, like, the artisanal cheese counter, right?
1:07:59 It is – it’s art for.
1:08:03 And we have this place – we live on Shelter Island in the summer, and this guy, Andrew,
1:08:04 runs the cheese wagon.
1:08:05 It’s literally a wagon.
1:08:10 And my wife and I will go there every few days just because we’ll sit there and taste
1:08:11 the cheese with them, and it’s, like, wine.
1:08:12 He just romances it.
1:08:20 So, the gap is, if you look at all the categories that have taken a more artisanal approach,
1:08:23 and then you go shop packaged cheese, it’s the same thing.
1:08:24 It’s cheddar.
1:08:25 It’s, like, mozzarella.
1:08:26 It has not changed.
1:08:31 And I love – my favorite packaging form in the world are the most baby bells, right?
1:08:34 And the wax, like, little Pac-Mans that you split apart.
1:08:35 Love them.
1:08:43 So, my idea is I want to create a line of gourmet cheeses in the, you know, in the pre-package
1:08:45 in those baby bell wax forms.
1:08:51 But do really, like, take what they’ve started and go super gourmet with different flavor profiles
1:08:58 and make that packaging form – I’d make it slightly bigger, too, different colors.
1:09:03 But I would build a whole line of gourmet cheeses around it.

1:09:14 You’re just saying, I want to do the gourmet cheeses, but in this new packaging and in that aisle.

1:09:24 Taking something that’s a kid product, but then elevate it as an adult product.
1:09:28 And there’s just something so fun about opening up that little wax.
1:09:29 It’s very satisfying.

1:09:32 Dude, I had three of these.
1:09:35 So, I do what I call redneck fitness food.
1:09:41 So, last night, I just had three baby bells for dinner, and I wrapped it in salami and just piled them in my mouth.
1:09:43 And I call it balls of fun.
1:09:47 Times of fun is really fast on that one.
1:09:49 Who are you telling this name to?
1:09:53 Sam’s mouth surprise.
1:09:54 I don’t know.
1:09:54 We’re still workshopping it.
1:09:55 I’m not sure yet.
1:10:01 But you could even squirt a little mustard at this ball.
1:10:03 Yeah, this is great.
1:10:04 I love those cheeses.
1:10:07 And I think they only make Gouda and, like, the normal one.
1:10:09 What is it about that packaging?
1:10:12 Does it actually – because it’s kind of softer inside, right?
1:10:15 Is that because of the type of cheese, or does the packaging do that?
1:10:19 Well, I think it’s already like that, but you could just, like, grab it.
1:10:21 It’s just, like, I’ll grab them, and I’ll literally put it in my pocket.
1:10:22 And, like, as I’m walking, I’ll eat it.
1:10:23 Oh, it’s a grab-and-go cheese.
1:10:24 Okay, gotcha.
1:10:25 And it’s a single serve.
1:10:26 It’s a single serve.
1:10:27 So, like, it’s, like, super easy.
1:10:30 But, yeah, it’s definitely a convenience thing.
1:10:32 It’s not necessarily a better-tasting thing.
1:10:35 But I think there’s something very primal, too, about opening it.
1:10:36 So, it feels natural.
1:10:37 It’s very relieving.
1:10:38 Peeling back the wax.
1:10:42 Like, opening an orange, like, you feel like a little monkey just getting into your snack.
1:10:45 And so it’s – and the time to fun on that is three seconds.
1:10:49 Yeah, it’s oddly satisfying whenever I peel back that wax.
1:10:53 And then when you peel back the wax, Sean, on, if you’ve ever done it, the two things open up.
1:10:56 And, like, the top part doesn’t fall off the bottom part of the wrapper.
1:10:57 You ever seen those –
1:10:57 It’s like an oyster.
1:10:59 Have you – yeah, it’s like an oyster.
1:11:05 Have you guys seen those new Coke bottles where you twist the cap off, and then it peels back, and the cap, like, stays on the bottle?
1:11:06 Oh, no, I haven’t seen that.
1:11:06 Oh, man.
1:11:07 It’s kind of like that.
1:11:08 I love that.
1:11:08 Just delightful.
1:11:10 Oh, is that so you can fully recycle the bottle, then?
1:11:12 Because the caps usually don’t get recycled.
1:11:19 Now, we might be breaking the laws of physics here, but one of the most satisfying food experiences in the world is cracking the top of a Coke can, the sound.
1:11:23 And the, like – literally, it’s like an iconic sound of the tab.
1:11:29 I wonder if there’s a way to, like, create some sound or satisfying crack here.
1:11:32 But I think I’m making a good idea bad here.
1:11:34 You’ve over-innovated it.
1:11:35 Yeah, he is.
1:11:36 One iteration.
1:11:41 Yeah, just Blue Bell or Baby Bell, whatever it’s called, but fancy cheese.
1:11:43 I also had a cheese idea.
1:11:45 So Great Minds Think Alike.
1:11:45 I also had a cheese idea.
1:11:52 Yours is better, but I’m just going to say mine out loud in case there’s something you want to steal out of the carcass of this idea that I’m about to give you.
1:11:54 This was, like, a dying idea I had.
1:12:04 But – so my mother-in-law came over, and she’s great, but, you know, she’s got mother-in-law-itis a little bit where she’s like, well, I know the answers to the test.
1:12:06 And you’re still trying to figure out the answers to the test.
1:12:07 So, like, let me just tell you what to do.
1:12:12 And so, for example, it would be like, oh, he’ll love this rice.
1:12:13 Kids love rice.
1:12:15 She’ll just say these generic things, like, kids love rice, so your kid’s going to love rice.
1:12:18 I’m like, no, no, he doesn’t eat rice, doesn’t like rice, blah, blah, blah.
1:12:19 Or, you know, milk.
1:12:24 Like, one of our kids wasn’t really drinking, like, milk from, like, a milk – like, a gallon of milk or whatever.
1:12:26 And she was like, all kids love milk.
1:12:27 Your kid’s going to love milk.
1:12:28 And we’re like, you can try.
1:12:30 Be my guest.
1:12:31 But, like, this kid doesn’t drink milk.
1:12:35 And I was waiting for, like, the satisfaction of being right.
1:12:39 And then five minutes later, she’s like, oh, he loves it.
1:12:40 And I’m like, no way.
1:12:41 And I go over.
1:12:49 And basically what she did was she would pour the milk into the top of the cap and give him – like, he got to have a tiny mini cup.
1:12:50 And he was, like, into that.
1:12:55 And so he was like, oh, like, taking shots of milk, like a spring breaker, basically.
1:12:57 And I couldn’t believe it.
1:12:58 And she was like, change of presentation.
1:13:02 And so now this phrase, change of presentation, has become a big deal.
1:13:05 So anytime there’s a food my kid doesn’t eat, it’s not a question of do they like it or not.
1:13:09 It’s what is the change of presentation we need to do to get them to eat it?
1:13:10 So, for example, bread was another.
1:13:11 Didn’t want bread.
1:13:17 My wife takes a cookie cutter, like the star shape or whatever, and he gets to stamp out the bread.
1:13:19 And now he likes that.
1:13:21 And we’re like, oh, my God, change of presentation.
1:13:24 And now your mother-in-law is the man of the house.
1:13:26 I think she already was.
1:13:28 And I just was in denial for a period of time.
1:13:33 But I, too, have now bent the knee like the tech CEOs, like, sucking up to Donald Trump, basically.
1:13:34 Like, that’s me now.
1:13:36 Or I’m like, wonderful idea.
1:13:37 Hello, mother.
1:13:38 Can we get more gold in this room?
1:13:39 Love it.
1:13:46 You know, so basically my cheese idea is basically instead of just slices of cheese, you include a stamper.
1:13:52 And the stamper is like shapes that they can stamp the cheese into so they can play like Play-Doh, stealing from Play-Doh.
1:13:56 And you basically get the Play-Doh shape cutters, but you apply it to cheese.
1:13:58 And you sell it together as a little pack, basically.
1:14:00 I think my kids would love that.
1:14:02 I don’t know how scalable that is.
1:14:04 You’ve got to add that.
1:14:05 That’s the problem.
1:14:09 I don’t know how you’re going to sell it.
1:14:10 Did you hear the point about my mother-in-law?
1:14:11 Did that come through?
1:14:12 Was the audio good on that?
1:14:20 When we sell 10 million versions of this, I don’t know if we can afford the operations.
1:14:24 I agree with the insight of change your presentation.
1:14:26 I don’t know if I agree with the application of it there.
1:14:28 Turning it into a toy.
1:14:32 So like giving them a little thing that they can do to the food.
1:14:33 I like that idea.
1:14:35 That I like as well.
1:14:37 Again, it’s like, it could be a durable.
1:14:39 It’s to your point of like, how do you make it a consumable?
1:14:40 So it’s an annuity.
1:14:41 So people keep buying it.
1:14:44 See, he’s in the cheese, but he’s a competitor now.
1:14:48 So he doesn’t like this idea because he’s like all about his like artisanal cheese.
1:14:52 I’m going to do this.
1:14:54 Baby Bell, look out.
1:14:56 His cheese comes with a little stamper.
1:14:58 And he’s like, yeah, the haters said it wasn’t scalable.
1:15:06 Dude, Sean just pitched craft singles that come with a cookie cutter.
1:15:07 Exactly.
1:15:09 I think he overcomplicated it.
1:15:16 The story is key to the understanding of the idea.
1:15:21 In fact, the label is going to include the entire story that I said in verbatim in size
1:15:22 eight font.
1:15:26 Instead of buying the chicken to support the chicken, you know, or like a good farm, we’re
1:15:28 going to be supporting Sean to stick it to his mother-in-law.
1:15:31 Hey guys, what happened to the safe space where there’s no bad ideas?
1:15:35 You’re like, watch what I do if you bring a weak, wimpy idea in here.
1:15:36 I’m going to give it a wedgie.
1:15:40 So I want to leave you with a big picture question.
1:15:42 You’ve, you’ve obviously done it.
1:15:43 You’ve proven yourself.
1:15:44 So that’s good.
1:15:46 You’ve made money doing what you have.
1:15:49 You know, you’re financially, you know, secure and free and all that.
1:15:51 What is like the end of the story for you?
1:15:53 Like, what are you trying to do?
1:15:54 Do you have somebody in mind, a hero?
1:15:55 You’re like, oh, I kind of want to be like them.
1:16:00 Do you think like 30 years down the road, like I want to have done X, Y, Z.
1:16:01 Do you not think about that at all?
1:16:03 Like, how do you think about your life?
1:16:04 Because like, you could just keep doing this.
1:16:05 Sounds fun.
1:16:07 Is there a big picture?
1:16:08 Yeah.
1:16:09 No, I’m a planner.
1:16:11 So there definitely is a big, a big picture for me.
1:16:15 I, at the heart of it, I love building and creating.
1:16:19 And if I wasn’t doing that, I think I’d be really miserable.
1:16:24 But what I don’t want to do anymore is, you know, be a CEO.
1:16:27 Were you the CEO before?
1:16:29 I’ve been CEO of my previous companies, yes.
1:16:35 And I love like being in it with a team and building it every day and in the trenches with
1:16:38 your team and helping steer the ship.
1:16:40 Like, I absolutely love that as well.
1:16:45 But I’m at the stage of my career that, you know, the pressures of raising capital and being
1:16:49 able to answer to that capital, I want to be able to work, you know, going back to projects,
1:16:50 work across more things.
1:16:54 So I’m splitting my time between, you know, continuing to incubate new ideas, but then I
1:16:56 hire CEO and team and I work alongside that team.
1:17:02 And then moving over to joining Graycroft to launch this Consumer Brands Fund, really now
1:17:06 being able to, you know, be more of a coach and help work with entrepreneurs.
1:17:12 We’ve had a bunch of people come on here with that, the dream, the have your cake and eat
1:17:12 it too.
1:17:16 It’s like, I want to be part of the idea and like the start, but then like the grind
1:17:19 for 10 years, like I really want an operator to do that part.
1:17:21 And some people have come on here and told us how they do that well.
1:17:25 So other people have been like, I don’t know how to, I can’t incept my idea and my energy
1:17:26 into somebody else.
1:17:28 That’s a really hard transfer to do.
1:17:30 Do you have like a talent strategy?
1:17:33 Like, how do you, how do you get the CEO to then like run your thing?
1:17:35 Do you have a strategy around that or is it?
1:17:36 It’s hard.
1:17:37 And that’s what I’ve been doing.
1:17:40 I’ve been doing more of an incubator model in my last few startups where I’ve not been
1:17:42 the CEO running it, but actually, you know, create the team.
1:17:47 So really what I love doing is like create the concept, pull together the team and the capital.
1:17:52 But the part of that that has been really hard is actually finding those leaders.
1:17:56 And, you know, the reality of being an entrepreneur, it’s iterative, right?
1:17:58 You try something, it works or it doesn’t work.
1:18:03 You’re constantly iterating your way to success in those early years, which means you’re running
1:18:06 up against roadblocks and things that worked and what didn’t work.
1:18:12 And what I found is there’s a certain personality that can live in that uncertainty of a startup
1:18:13 and stay committed to it.
1:18:17 So when something doesn’t work, instead of panicking, they quickly start taking the clues,
1:18:21 figuring out, making adjustments, keeping the team confident and bringing along with them.
1:18:25 That’s the art of entrepreneurship that is really, really tough to hire for.
1:18:28 Because the ones who are good at it, want to create, they probably have their own idea that
1:18:29 they’re working on.
1:18:34 And what I found is I would hire very accomplished people, but their entire life had been fairly
1:18:37 linear in their careers where like, you know, I get good grades.
1:18:38 It unlocks getting in this good college.
1:18:40 I do really well at school.
1:18:45 It unlocks getting the right into, like each thing unlocks the next step for them.
1:18:47 And that’s always work because they’re incredibly smart, talented people.
1:18:49 But that’s not the reality in entrepreneurship.
1:18:53 And so what I saw a pattern of, like I would hire these incredibly accomplished CEOs.
1:18:58 And then as soon as things would start going wrong, which they always do in a startup,
1:19:02 they would really struggle to the mental games of that.
1:19:04 That’s the hardest part of this model.
1:19:06 You’re amazing.
1:19:10 You know, every once in a while, we have episodes that we’re like, we have to have a part two
1:19:12 and sometimes a part three and a part four.
1:19:13 And hopefully that will be the case with you.
