0:00:26 but what is the smart money doing with AI?
0:00:29 And, you know, in betting and sports betting in Vegas,
0:00:31 you always kind of want to watch, what are the sharps doing?
0:00:34 They tend to be just, you know, maybe 10 or 15% earlier
0:00:37 to understanding things or to recognizing things.
0:00:40 And so similarly, Jason, I wanted you on,
0:00:42 because you’ve been doing really interesting stuff with AI,
0:00:45 both from investing, you’re talking to startups that are using them,
0:00:49 you’re reading all the reports, but also you yourself built this AI tool.
0:00:53 And so I want to kind of get your reaction to a few of the different things.
0:00:56 Can you first explain this AI experiment you did
0:00:58 where you basically made a body double of yourself out of AI
0:01:00 and like, what was the experiment and what’d you learn?
0:01:01 Well, yeah.
0:01:03 So, so Saster has a lot of content.
0:01:05 As you guys know, we have 12 years of content.
0:01:06 Some of it’s out of date, right?
0:01:07 For, for sure.
0:01:10 Saster being, um, you’re a previous founder
0:01:12 who’s exited multiple software companies.
0:01:14 Now you’re like the godfather of like Sass
0:01:16 because you have this blog and media company
0:01:17 and events business called Saster
0:01:19 and you have a huge fund.
0:01:24 But probably most interestingly for, for like seeing the future a little bit
0:01:29 is I have about 10,000 pieces of content I’ve written over the years.
0:01:30 A lot of it, which is not out of date.
0:01:32 And I update it personally.
0:01:33 So I have about 10,000 pieces of content.
0:01:38 And then we have several thousand interviews like you guys do,
0:01:41 but with so many great folks, early ones with Darmesh, middle ones from Darmesh.
0:01:45 Darmesh, when HubSpot had just IPO, Darmesh the other day, Yamini last week,
0:01:47 Brian Halligan over the years.
0:01:48 And we have all of it.
0:01:52 And our AI took everything I’ve written, every tweet I’ve ever done,
0:01:56 every LinkedIn post, every Saster video from every speaker for 12 years.
0:01:59 Aaron Levy, the week he went IPO for the first Saster annual
0:02:03 to last week when we were talking about AI, all of it ingested in this AI.
0:02:08 And so what I instantly saw was as soon as I would talk to this AI,
0:02:10 it was much better than me.
0:02:14 It was much better than me because I forget stuff.
0:02:15 How did you get that information in there?
0:02:17 You just hook up RSS, right?
0:02:19 The feed for blog.
0:02:21 It can scrape the web, which is pretty easy.
0:02:23 Soon we’ll be able to do other things like MCB,
0:02:26 but it’s just scraping APIs and RSS.
0:02:27 It’s really just scraping.
0:02:28 You just give a URL.
0:02:32 But did you use like Delphi or you built your own tool or what’d you do?
0:02:34 I tried a couple of things and then I used Delphi.
0:02:38 And then at first we had so much content, it was a little difficult to ingest it.
0:02:40 So there is a little bit of work.
0:02:44 And then I spend about 10 minutes a day training it, which we could talk about.
0:02:49 So there is a little bit of maintenance involved, but it’s better than me.
0:02:53 And the thing I didn’t get until I saw something that was hyper-trained,
0:02:55 like this is a lot of content, 20 million words, right?
0:02:58 Very few mistakes, very few hallucinations,
0:03:02 and the ability to connect things that I can’t.
0:03:03 I just don’t remember.
0:03:07 I don’t remember what Sam and I said on the hustle on stage years ago versus when we did
0:03:11 an MFM a while versus today, but the AI knows it all.
0:03:16 By the way, 20 million words is like 200 books worth of content.
0:03:17 An average book, I think, is like 100,000 words.
0:03:24 So 20 million words you’re saying is you basically gave it 200 books of your own brain and the
0:03:26 brains of other guests that have come on your show.
0:03:31 And your goal was to build, was it to build basically an advisor, an AI version of you
0:03:35 that could be an advisor to a founder who wants to come and talk to you, ask questions, but
0:03:37 you don’t have enough time of the day to book calls?

0:03:40 I just wanted to learn like you guys did.

0:03:45 I didn’t think it would be as good as it was because I used other products and I’ve used
0:03:49 other things and it wasn’t as good as my digital AI was.

0:03:51 But the use case would be what?

0:03:57 The other interesting thing is the use cases with AI are much broader than you’d expect.

0:04:04 So I didn’t expect people to upload their board decks before board meetings and ask for feedback

0:04:05 That’s an issue use case.
0:04:10 I didn’t expect hundreds and hundreds of founders to use it as their therapist for their company
0:04:11 where the growth has slowed.
0:04:12 I didn’t expect that.
0:04:18 I didn’t expect so many folks to use it to review their sales scripts, their SDI scripts
0:04:21 when there’s specific tools to do it, right?
0:04:25 I didn’t expect it’s so good at reviewing VC pitch decks.
0:04:28 It’s so good at it better than anything I’ve seen.

0:05:28 I’ll just ask the AI what, you know, basically you’ll just be in the meeting with us.

0:05:32 She’s like, we just took all the podcasts and we’re training it on how you think, the questions
0:05:36 you would ask, what you would say, reactions you would give.
0:05:37 And now you’re just there in the meeting.
0:05:40 So she basically hired me without ever paying me, right?
0:05:42 Because I have this corpus of content out there.
0:05:44 I’ve actually put my brain out there in the public.
0:05:45 But how do I do that?
0:05:51 Like, can I just upload a YouTube channel and say, this YouTube creator has great advice
0:05:54 and I can upload 800 videos and it will transcribe all of them.

0:06:00 It may take a day or two to fully ingest all that content, but it will do it just from the

0:06:19 And like, you don’t realize like they’re just so far ahead of like B2B and regular people
0:06:21 only because they’re better people working on them.
0:06:26 If we had the quality of people working at windsurf, working on, on CRM, okay.
0:06:31 Or working on marketing tools or podcasting tools, your jaw would drop today.
0:06:36 But this is why your jaw is going to drop over the next 24 months because just mediocre
0:06:40 engineers cannot, like the, the engineers at OpenAI are so good.
0:06:42 They’re just so good.
0:06:46 And so, but the average engineer working at a struggling CRM, right?
0:06:49 It’s just not, just not that, that good, but they’ll catch up.
0:06:50 But yeah, you can build all of this.
0:06:51 And here’s the interesting learning.
0:06:55 So we could build a digital Sam and we could do this for next week or whatever.

0:07:43 It has 35,000 conversations with people.
0:07:44 You did it as an experiment.

0:07:51 And learning number one, you said users will tell AI things that they won’t tell humans.

0:07:57 Well, first of all, before we can get there, one obvious, like there’s no way I could do

0:08:30 I’m not like a super influencer like you guys are, but there’s enough people that know the
0:08:32 digital me that they already know what to ask me, right?
0:08:33 They’ve already watched me at an event.
0:08:34 They’ve read the content.
0:08:39 So like they ask me things without thinking it’s a prompt or a prompt.
0:08:40 They just ask things.
0:08:42 They want to talk about their deepest fears.
0:08:46 Like I’ve partnered with Sam on this podcast, but I’m not sure he’s committed as me.

0:08:50 He’s into this accounting software and this Hamptons thing.

0:08:55 And my AI is really good with talking that through you, right?

0:10:25 It’s just because it’s got the 20 million words for business to business content, sales content, scaling your revenue.

0:11:22 So what’s interesting is that content is already there, but by heavily weighting it toward my content for my type of knowledge, it’s much – it’s not a little bit better than ChatGPT.

0:11:26 How do I create a sales comp plan?

0:11:37 Our average deal size is 2K a year, and we want to go from 2 million to 6 million next year, and my team won’t really do outbound.

0:11:45 But my AI is going to give you insanely good answers, even though overall we’re pulling from the same content.

0:12:44 Now, what I do do, here’s what I do do, is, and I’ll tell you my learnings on my hallucinations, okay?
0:12:46 I audit a few of them.
0:12:48 I read some, and I see if they’re wrong, right?
0:12:51 I see if the ones that are not anonymous, if they’re wrong.
0:12:57 And when I see something that’s wrong, and I’ll tell you what I learned, if you’re interested, then there’s a section where I just train it, right?
0:13:07 And I say, no, Sam and I first met in 2016 after I wrote a Quora post, and he had me do a meetup at The Hustle, okay?

0:13:14 So I do that for about 10 or 15 minutes a day, and it turns out it doesn’t get very many things wrong.

0:13:27 If you do nothing, and you don’t train it, and you put no content in, yeah, this average VP of sales is going to say,

0:13:32 You know, I logged into ChatGPT a year ago, and it hallucinated.

0:13:41 But the hard part here is, like, so I’m so committed to ChatGPT, so it knows so much of my information because we’ve had so many conversations.

0:13:48 Are we all going to have, like, files, you know, like our health record, where it’s like, you know, the background?
0:13:53 Because it sounds like I get nervous to switch to any other model because I’m like, oh, ChatGPT, I’ve already asked it so many questions.

0:13:55 It’s an interesting question.
0:13:56 Here’s what I’ve learned.
0:13:58 First of all, memory is a big deal, right?
0:14:01 ChatGPT could already remember questions, but now it’s remembering everything, okay?
0:14:02 So it’s a moat.
0:14:13 From the top folks I’ve worked with on this, on the one hand, it’s a moat, just like being in the Google ecosystem is a moat, just like being back in the day, being in the Yahoo ecosystem was a moat, okay?
0:14:16 But the moat is not as deep as we think.
0:14:20 Our ability to get trained and up to speed does not require 20 million words.
0:14:22 So, yes, it is a moat.
0:14:30 But if you decided Claude was much better for you and you – the point is and you spent a month just including your day, each day, you’re probably there.

0:14:33 It doesn’t need to go as deep.

0:14:56 So basically you’d be able to just like – the way Plaid lets you connect your bank safely to any financial service to be able to take your kind of memory and context, what ChatGPT knows about you, but port that to some new app that you’re trying without handing over everything, but allow it to pull from that.
0:14:58 And I was like, oh, that’s actually a very interesting idea.
0:15:00 If apps will even exist in the future.
0:15:03 What will exist instead of apps?
0:15:06 Why – we’re going through a transition phase, right?

0:15:18 But we’re starting to not even know where we’re chatting with, right?
0:15:28 Right now already – like MCP is new, but already today OpenAI and Claude can pull from other apps like HubSpot and others and Notion and just pull the data out.

0:15:37 As we live in this – and then people think this Johnny Ive thing for $6 billion is crazy.
0:15:44 It’s a great bet because we’re going to go from 20 minutes a day, 22 minutes a day in ChatGPT to 24 hours a day in ChatGPT.
0:15:49 And when we’re in ChatGPT 24 hours a day, we’re not going to like pull up a CRM.

0:16:30 So how’s the – because everyone talks about the dot-com boom and I never got to – I mean I never experienced it, but how’s this today compared to then?
0:16:35 Those days were the first time until AI where people feel like they could just do something out of nothing.

0:16:39 And that is what AI is like today.
0:16:44 People are just doing miraculous things and it’s exciting, but man, it’s super scary for incumbents.

0:16:57 Do you think that everybody who is maybe a content creator at least is going to have this sort of like – this stunt double, this intellectual stunt double the way that you created here?
0:17:03 Do you see – once you did this experiment, are you like this is the future or this was novel, but no, I don’t think it’s going to last.

0:17:10 Well, first of all, what I think – I’m not a consumer content creator.
0:17:16 I don’t think anyone is going to create content without AI going forward and the tools are going to change.
0:17:21 Like, for example, just for our last big Sastra event, like I did all this speaker promos in Higgsfield.

0:21:59 because Morgan Stanley had this report, which who gives a shit about Morgan Stanley, but they
0:22:04 said that the majority of, uh, value creation in terms of market cap for, uh, AI is going to
0:22:10 be the big companies using AI to get better versus, uh, new AI companies.

0:24:43 And then there, it’s still a little bit of a headache around authentication and security.

0:24:50 And then you can just talk to your calendar and chat and HubSpot has announced this.

0:25:38 We know how to do that.

0:25:43 It’s basically like how APIs work for, for most websites, but MCP is like the AI specific

0:25:49 But right now to integrate with, and I haven’t ever used HubSpot’s API, but I, I’m sure it’s

0:25:55 HubSpot’s API is different than Salesforce and Notion and linear.

0:25:58 You have to get a key.

0:28:10 And the way he did it was he was like, you know, if people, people always talk about New
0:28:10 York.
0:28:13 So if it’s, if I hear New York a thousand times, that doesn’t actually mean New York is
0:28:13 trending.
0:28:14 It just means New York is already big.
0:28:19 But if suddenly everybody’s talking about Tallahassee, well, Tallahassee doesn’t normally
0:28:22 get talked about that much, but it’s being talked about as much as New York.
0:28:23 That means it’s trending.
0:28:27 And so he had a separate site that was trying to figure out what are the trends?
0:28:29 Now this, they ended up getting bought by Twitter.
0:28:32 And that’s now what, if you go on Twitter, Twitter as trending, right?
0:28:35 So my friend Abder was just, I was like, what was it like in those days?
0:28:39 And he was like, I thought I knew what a startup was.
0:28:42 I thought, and I, this, I related to this so much.
0:28:46 He’s like, basically I thought a startup was, I wake up every day and I got to go try to get
0:28:46 some growth.
0:28:49 And I’m pushing, I’m pushing, I’m pushing the product forward.
0:28:50 I’m pushing the marketing forward.
0:28:52 I’m pushing my product out into the market.
0:28:53 Push, push, push.
0:28:57 He goes, then imagine like, you know, you think you’re pushing and then suddenly you’re pushing
0:29:02 a boulder up a mountain and you look up and there’s a giant avalanche coming at you.
0:29:03 It’s pulling towards you, right?
0:29:04 It’s coming straight at you.
0:29:09 And so he goes, my first six months at Twitter, he goes, I woke up and I had the QWERTY keyboard
0:29:11 like imprinted on my forehead.
0:29:15 Like I would just fall asleep at my desk and I’d wake up and I’m back at work.
0:29:19 He’s like, basically that’s how I lived for like six straight months because, and he’s
0:29:22 like, everybody’s making fun of us because the Twitter had the fail whale.
0:29:26 He’s like, but nobody had ever scaled a service like this, this fast.
0:29:28 And so we just couldn’t keep it up.
0:29:29 And we was like, we were, trust me, we were trying.
0:29:31 Everyone thought we were being lazy or stupid.
0:29:32 He’s like, we are the smartest people.
0:29:33 We were trying our absolute hardest.
0:29:35 And it was just so, so difficult.
0:29:40 And I think what’s happening with a lot of these AI companies is that, you know, Sam, you
0:29:44 and I, I think we probably only really experienced push for the, for most of our startup
0:29:44 career.
0:29:45 Yeah.
0:29:47 It’s never felt like I was holding on.
0:29:49 It felt like I was pushing it.
0:29:51 It got a little easier sometimes, but it was always resisting.
0:29:53 Like I have this company now we haven’t announced this.
0:29:58 And I just like, we have this, uh, AI bot that will come and tell us our new contracts and
0:29:59 our new revenue.
0:30:02 Last week we closed a million dollars in new contracts in a week.
0:30:10 And I was like, I have never felt this level of pull ever in any business I’ve ever done.
0:30:12 And we’re not working 10 times harder.
0:30:15 It’s just that like the market wants this type of product at a different level.
0:30:20 I am sure that the folks like, you know, open AI and all these AI startups are going, they’re
0:30:25 experiencing a startup experience that is not, we, it was not anything like what you and I
0:30:25 experienced, Sam.
0:30:30 I think it was zero to 800 million users in seven months.
0:30:31 Is that what Mary Meeker said?

0:30:39 We could look or X, but yeah, 10% of the world, 10% of the world in eight months or something

0:30:57 And then they’ve showed that like the action, it’s not just the users that have doubled, but

0:31:08 And that’s, it’s pretty obvious to me now that I’m kind of an idiot for not investing in
0:31:10 this company, even at really any price point.
0:31:13 Like this is, this is basically the Facebook of this generation, right?
0:31:20 Like, yeah, I don’t think we realized that open, that chat GBT would have 85% market share
0:31:22 at the prosumer consumer level.
0:31:26 That, that way, that’s what, what all that meant surprised if we, if we’d know, because
0:31:27 ironically, chat GBT was an experiment.
0:31:28 It was a proof of concept.
0:31:33 It wasn’t really meant to be the product that the, the, the center of open AI, but like,

0:31:36 Like the way I do, cause I’m, I just look back.
0:31:38 I’m like, how much, how many hours have I spent thinking about AI?
0:31:41 I’m supposed to be an investor, you know, like you’re a SaaS investor.

0:33:51 have a different relationship to money and investment than a few years back.
0:33:56 And a lot of founders would quit today if their investments were worth more than their founder

0:34:06 I think it took me three years to get to a million subscribers, a million users.
0:34:09 And that was like life-changing for me to get as fast as some of these guys are growing.

0:36:06 But one is you have to be able to ship insanely good software, which maybe in some business

0:36:19 And then the second one is you have to like be relentless to owning a market.

0:36:34 but I don’t have to sell a lot of stock and it’s calmer and I could sell my company for

0:36:42 And like the, now the, the best founders today are relentless to being absolutely number one
0:36:43 in destroying and owning the market.

0:36:47 And because the markets are bigger, it compounds to something crazy.

0:36:52 I mean, again, just one example, but Sammy and I are both investors and owner and like,
0:36:56 you know, Adam was what, whatever, you know, high school dropout starting this company.
0:36:58 I mean, he’s going to disrupt the entire restaurant industry.

0:37:06 And he has an incredible technical co-founder, now an incredible engineering team.
0:37:09 And that product owner, here’s an interesting thing.
0:37:10 Cause I invested in the seed round in 2021.
0:37:14 Adam hates it when I say this, but the product was not very good.

0:37:17 The CTO, it did a lot, the product, but it was not very good.
0:37:20 The reason it killed all its direct competitors, not indirect.

0:39:18 but the lifestyle businesses are being slaughtered because when these three kids come to SF working
0:39:22 in the mission and they’re working eight days a week and they’ve taken your little idea,

0:39:25 Your lifestyle is going to be unemployment.

0:39:31 I think a few years back, it’s okay.
0:39:34 I just worry people are going to take the wrong lessons from it.

0:39:40 You can do more with fewer people, but you better work harder if there’s comp or find a space

0:39:47 But the weird thing about AI is, is there’s competition in spaces that two years ago had

0:41:24 So we have none of the designers, none of the content people.

0:41:36 Like, okay, nine months ago, Yamini would come to a Sastra event.

0:41:43 And three months later, a ghostwriter would write up a terrible summary of her thing.

0:41:46 And I would cry and we’d ask them to fix it because I can’t do everything.

0:41:49 And then about nine months ago, they got better.
0:41:52 They actually, they got, they weren’t great, but they got better.
0:41:53 And I hadn’t actually used Claude.
0:41:56 And then I went into Claude and I’m like, this, she just put it in Claude.
0:41:59 And they start charging us $5,000 a month for this.
0:42:04 So like, we can do this for 20 bucks in an hour instead of $5,000 and waiting two weeks
0:42:05 with their clients.

0:42:06 So we didn’t need the ghostwriters.
0:42:07 We got rid of first.
0:42:08 Right.
0:42:10 Then we had five people.
0:42:13 Then we had an agency we worked with for years and for a while it was great.
0:42:14 And they would review all these speakers.
0:42:15 There’s a lot of work to work with speakers.

0:42:19 And when you have hundreds and hundreds of speakers, it’s impossible to do it all.

0:42:22 But they decided they just didn’t want to work that hard anymore.
0:42:26 So they only, they wanted to charge us two to three times more and only do half the work.
0:42:27 So it just didn’t help us.

0:42:30 So then we’re like, we’re, we’re SOL now.
0:42:32 We’re five months before Sastra annual.
0:42:34 And we just said, well, let’s have our AI do it.
0:42:37 And it, it reviewed 300 sessions, 300 slide decks, 300 presentations.
0:42:41 But do you have to chase those 300 people down to give you the talk?
0:42:45 Yeah, we still have to, like, it doesn’t get rid of everything, but it does 90% of the work

0:43:07 And, uh, and then like we have a time, you know, we have a little bit of a sales team,
0:43:12 but then RAI just started to do all the screening and initial sales conversations for us.

0:43:19 Even for it’s, this is a very niche business, a trade show business.

0:43:25 To say you do 25 million in revenue with five employees is pretty breathtaking because I would
0:43:28 have thought that would be on the lower end.
0:43:32 Your business would be on the lower end of like, well, I still need people, but you have
0:43:33 just proven that not to be true.

0:46:33 a couple of weeks ago with Kleiner Perkins and said the biggest issue when he sold MailChimp
0:46:36 for 12 billion or whatever it was, is, was he knew he would be instantly irrelevant.

0:46:45 He’s like, you wouldn’t even build a tool like MailChimp today in the age of AI.

0:51:47 Then other founders started, then founder of talk desk came by that one was worth 10 billion

0:51:50 Then the founders of Algolia came by that’s worth two and a half billion.
0:51:56 Um, then the founder of sales loft came by, we sold that for 2.3 billion cash in 2021.
0:51:59 And they kept coming by and I’d be like, well, let’s just invest in these ones because this
0:52:00 is the best ideas I got.
0:52:03 Like I’m not the outbound guy, like finding Sam Hall.
0:52:07 So I just invested in the five best guys that came by the office the first year, but they’re
0:52:09 all worth, ended up being worth a billion dollars.
0:52:14 So, so that’s, I, I only, so the weird thing about me for investing, and then I can tell you
0:52:16 about events real quick, but I don’t spend all the time.
0:52:19 I only, I’m, I’m different than 99.9% investors.

0:53:17 if you don’t want this more than life, you’re not, you’re going to, you’re just going to sell
0:53:19 your lifestyle business, which is very logical.

0:53:27 So you’re basically saying if they’re not like basically digging my content, they’re not taking
0:53:28 as seriously as they should.
0:53:31 Is that, is that the implication basically that if somebody is seriously trying to build a
0:53:34 generational company, they should be loving our content and therefore they should want

0:53:39 I want them sending me a cold email that is so good that you would invest off the cold email.

0:54:17 And in that, one of the things that he shared was they had done like a hack week.
0:54:21 So there was like some loom videos of the team sharing their hack week projects.
0:54:22 And I actually just watched those.

0:54:27 And it just showed like the, the caliber of the team was really incredible.
0:54:29 Like you can see the caliber of team in a hack week project, right?
0:54:33 Because almost by definition, it’s here’s just like one or an engineer and a designer.

0:54:37 They have a very short timeline to ship it.
0:54:38 And then they have to pitch it and present it.
0:54:43 So you get to see like the, the quality of idea, the quality of speed of execution and the
0:54:47 quality of salesmanship all in one from like, without abstracting away.
0:54:49 The founder is like, that’s the team itself.
0:54:53 And, uh, I emailed him back with, you know, I was like, we don’t need to meet.

0:54:58 You, that’s, it’s not the only way to invest, but what I can tell you is if the email’s mediocre,

1:00:21 So right when I moved to San Francisco, I remember we, you know, I joined Birch’s startup studio
1:00:25 and there was a single mobile developer and he would, my very first day, he was giving a
1:00:29 tutorial to the other 12 engineers who were like, you know, super seasoned Silicon Valley
1:00:31 engineers, but they just never built an iOS app before.
1:00:32 Yeah.
1:00:38 And I’ll, and like that ratio of like one mobile developer to, you know, 12, 15 non-mobile
1:00:40 developers within 12 months, it flipped.
1:00:42 It was like, if you’re not doing mobile, what are you even doing?
1:00:44 Why would you do a startup if it’s not a mobile startup?
1:00:47 It was like a, a, a dumb idea.
1:00:50 And by the time you’re, you know, a year later into the job.
1:00:55 And so I saw mobile come and mobile was one of those where I would say it was obviously
1:00:57 going to happen, but it was a fog of war.
1:00:59 You didn’t know where the opportunities were.
1:01:02 And actually the opportunities were very different than the previous wave.
1:01:08 So like Michael, who had made a billion dollars in web 1.0 or 2.0 or whatever, like, you know,
1:01:13 the Facebook era, he didn’t realize, even Facebook didn’t realize Zuck didn’t build mobile apps,
1:01:13 right?
1:01:15 He was like, no, no, no, it’ll be mobile web responsive.
1:01:15 That’ll work.
1:01:21 And you know, the fact that basically Uber was like the big, Uber was like the biggest winner
1:01:26 basically during that, like that era when we, when we launched and Uber was like physical
1:01:30 world interaction, like you push a button, but a car has to show up and you have to manage
1:01:30 these drivers.
1:01:33 And that looked nothing like the winners before.
1:01:37 So there was like, we all knew mobile was big, but we didn’t understand the, the fog of
1:01:39 war prevented us from seeing the path to victory.
1:01:40 Yeah.
1:01:41 Then the next one was crypto.
1:01:46 Crypto had a different flavor, which was, it was not consensus that this was going to be
1:01:46 big.
1:01:50 In fact, it was very fringe and you looked a little crazy for saying this was going to be
1:01:50 big.
1:01:53 And so most of us missed it for that reason.
1:01:57 And now this is the, really the third one I’ll like take COVID out.
1:01:59 Cause I was, that was a little bit of a different thing.
1:02:03 This is the third one where again, everybody agrees.
1:02:04 This is going to be huge.
1:02:06 This is going to be the biggest of all of them.
1:02:07 It’s the biggest opportunity ever.
1:02:08 Right?
1:02:12 So everybody agrees on that, but there’s complete fog of war because like you’re saying, even
1:02:13 the apps that are working get disrupted.
1:02:15 There’s like so much creative destruction there.
1:02:19 One moment you think it’s the models that are going to get all the money.
1:02:20 Then you think it’s NVIDIA that’s going to get all the money.
1:02:22 Then you think it’s the applications that are going to get all the money.
1:02:25 Nobody knows how to win.
1:02:28 Even on the investment side, like the VCs also, you’re sitting there and you have this
1:02:32 really weird feeling because you know, this is the time when all the money is going to
1:02:32 get made.
1:02:34 The generational money is going to get made now.
1:02:37 You still have no idea where to put it.
1:02:39 And people are trying to figure that out in the fog of war.
1:02:43 It’s like that Warren Buffett phrase where they, where he says, um, uh, every, every,
1:02:46 you see who’s swimming naked when the tide comes in or goes out, you know what I’m
1:02:50 saying, uh, where the idea being like, uh, you know, when there’s turmoil, that’s when
1:02:56 you get greedy, but the hard part is a, the courage and B to know when the turmoil is actually
1:02:56 happening.
1:02:58 You know, are you in that period now?
1:02:59 We all know it’s happening.
1:03:05 Uh, this is the time, but do you or I have the want desire courage to actually get after
1:03:06 it?
1:03:09 And half the time I think, hell yeah, this is amazing.

1:03:31 Like this is the world’s going to be like, whatever you could do to, to liquidate your assets.
1:03:33 Now they may be worthless down the road.
1:03:35 So liquidate them right now and chill.
1:03:38 If you don’t, if you don’t see the future, because this is the time, right?
1:03:43 I, I do think, and I also think, you know, I used to, it wasn’t until we ran our own AI
1:03:47 again, I used to think the node coast, I mean, obviously off the charts, smart, right.
1:03:50 But when he used to talk about how AI was going to bring mass unemployment in tech, I used to
1:03:52 think he was just being crazy.
1:03:52 Right.
1:03:53 But now I can see it.
1:03:54 It’s also coming.
1:03:58 I can see all the, I mean, McKinsey just laid 10% of their, their team off, but it’s just
1:04:02 a start because they put in all of their learnings, all of their data into their
1:04:03 own AI, like Sastra.
1:04:06 And now they just ask, they don’t need the kid anymore, right?
1:04:09 Half of our sales and marketing teams are going to be gone in two years.
1:04:11 There will be no BDRs in a year.
1:04:14 And so this mass change, and it is hard to make bets.
1:04:18 So what’s happening in venture for what it’s worth, there’s really two things happening right
1:04:18 now in venture.
1:04:20 70% of the money is going into growth.
1:04:22 And right now it’s a great play.
1:04:26 You do Claude at a billion, and then it goes to 3 billion and the valuation goes 5X.
1:04:30 You put in 200 million, that 200 million goes to 600 million, right?
1:04:32 You take home 20% of the profits.
1:04:35 You make $80 million in a year, right?
1:04:36 That’s where a venture is going.
1:04:37 All growth.
1:04:38 It’s all growth.
1:04:44 And then it’s doing seed early stuff, but implicitly people are assuming a very high loss rate and
1:04:45 they’re paying very high prices.
1:04:48 60 million, $100 million valuations at seed.
1:04:53 And they’re hoping it’s worth billions, but they understand like there will be uniquely high
1:04:54 loss rates too.
1:04:56 They’re not saying it, but they know it, right?
1:04:57 They know it.
1:04:58 Yeah.
1:04:59 And that seems hard to make money, right?
1:05:03 Those two, that combination of high valuations and high loss rate, doesn’t that-
1:05:08 Well, if you have $100 billion outcomes, if you get one per fund at all, that’s the bet they’re
1:05:13 making, that there’ll be $100 billion outcome for each venture fund, right?
1:05:16 But back when HubSpot, again, when HubSpot IPO, the bet was you’d have a billion dollar outcome
1:05:17 per fund, one.
1:05:20 Now it’s $100 billion per fund.
1:05:25 So if you believe you’ll do that, you can do some, you can do a little analysis or waterfall and
1:05:26 you can just have Claude do it for you.
1:05:28 You don’t even have to do the analysis yourself anymore.

1:05:32 You just got to find one of them and they all, the rest can crash and burn, right?
1:05:34 So what is your game plan?
1:05:41 I have decided that whatever brand I still have and my excitement and my ability actually

1:05:54 I’ve decided that I’ll get one, at least one $10 billion deal done in the next three years,

1:07:09 There’s a gap that doesn’t exist.
1:07:14 Because you’re either in it for the fees and the job, like initially, like, wow, I’m a

1:07:17 I’m getting paid $250,000 and I just get to take meetings.
1:07:18 It seems great.
1:07:21 Then you’re finally a partner and you make a couple million bucks a year.
1:07:23 And that’s like much better than like some other job.
1:07:25 But there’s a pretty big gap between that.
1:07:29 Like you don’t, it’s really actually, unless you’re great, it’s really hard to make profits
1:07:30 in venture or carry.
1:07:33 So the game is to make a fucking lot of it.

1:07:38 And listen, and the thing is, if you’re in a big winner, if you’re in multiple big winners,
1:07:39 just do the math, Sam.
1:07:43 Like that’s why most VCs make nothing except a good salary.
1:07:47 But there are a bunch that have made billions because if you’re in like three or four or
1:07:51 five of those $10 billion outcomes, which is very hard, then you make a billion bucks.

1:07:57 But you’re either playing that game or it’s a performative game or it’s really just for fees

1:08:00 Like there really is, there’s nothing in between.

1:08:49 my sons, my son’s a sophomore.
1:08:52 Now, 10% of his class didn’t even want to go to college at all.
1:08:55 And they just decided that they could, they all had this vibe.
1:08:58 I’m going to go to Eastern Europe or it’s cheap and I can just make money on the internet.

1:09:01 There’s no interest in ever having.
1:09:03 And I don’t think my son really wants to ever have a real job.

1:11:35 None of them were willing to do any work themselves.

1:11:37 The people with the circle.
1:11:42 The young people, the Gen Z’s folks, their, their expectations, their, their expectations
1:11:45 for salary or for comp is so high.

1:11:49 I’m talking about folks that are already been out of the workforce for six months, but yeah,
1:11:51 the expectations are, they’d rather not work.
1:11:52 That’s the thing.
1:11:54 A lot of people would rather not work than get their comp.

1:11:56 I mean, yeah, that sounds good to me too.
1:12:01 I don’t know how everyone’s like, listen, there’s obviously an element of privilege in

1:12:05 And for folks that are living in different geographies or others will think this is disgusting.
1:12:06 And I think they’re right.
1:12:10 But I also think folks who have made a little bit of money in tech or otherwise are happy
1:12:15 to live on relatively low amounts of money with, with their savings or others, rather than just
1:12:16 take a job.
1:12:19 No matter what it’s, what, what the internet says.

1:12:21 Um, Jason, is this a stupid mental model?
1:12:22 Well, I do this sometimes.
1:12:27 If I, if I want to hire somebody and I’m interested in their $200,000 a year, let’s say, and let’s
1:12:30 say my business is 20% net profit margins.
1:12:35 I think to myself, this person has to basically generate a million dollars of extra revenue
1:12:38 just for me to break even on their salary.
1:12:41 Now, maybe they’re, maybe they’re doing it in coordination with a team, but like the addition
1:12:46 of this person in order for it to be a positive ROI, I have to believe that adding this person
1:12:48 yields me a million dollars of extra revenue.
1:12:53 And when I do that, I mean, 90% of the time I’m like, there’s no chance.
1:12:55 No, this is like, that, that wouldn’t even make sense here.
1:13:00 Um, so I don’t know if my mental model is broken or if I’m actually onto something with
1:13:00 that.
1:13:03 Is that, how, is that, is that a really dumb way of thinking about that?
1:13:06 That is, that is the model for sales reps.
1:13:11 Like traditionally a sales executive, whether they sold software or an automobile, a sales
1:13:13 executive in base and bonus would take them 20% of the profits.
1:13:16 If you look at how car dealers, car dealers have low margins, right?
1:13:20 But if you look at the margin, um, to a car dealer, uh, the, the, the guy selling you
1:13:25 the, the new, the new Lexus net net would take them 20% of the profit to the dealer, right?
1:13:27 If the dealer made no profit, they’d make nothing.
1:13:31 If they ripped you off and got you to pay list, plus the, the CD player for a thousand dollars,
1:13:32 they’d make a lot, right?
1:13:38 Sales is the same way because in, in, in software, the margins are almost a hundred percent reps
1:13:41 would traditionally take them 20 to 25% of what they closed, right?
1:13:43 Sales for other roles.
1:13:48 Um, it’s really just about leverage and you’re often just hoping to break even, but even to
1:13:52 break even, let’s say it’s a $200,000 employee to break even, you need a million dollars of
1:13:53 incremental revenue to break even on that.
1:13:54 Yes.
1:13:55 But one way, this is what I learned.
1:13:59 For example, one way that law firms traditionally were structured, this is slightly interesting
1:14:03 and it may be different today, but traditionally law firms, actually most law firms, not the
1:14:07 big, the, not the litigators, but like your corporate law firm that helps you on stuff.
1:14:09 They never made money on the associates.
1:14:10 Okay.
1:14:11 So why would you have associates?
1:14:13 I didn’t know this until I asked a partner that I worked with.
1:14:16 I was like, cause I just don’t want to do that work anymore.
1:14:18 I don’t want to write the certificate of incorporation for Sam.
1:14:19 I don’t want to do the NDA.
1:14:24 Like I don’t, we don’t make any money net net net of training and offboarding and churn and
1:14:26 the, and the desk and the computer.
