0:01:36 And we get some great advice from Dan on how young men and all of us can be more socially engaged.
0:01:40 Here’s my conversation with Scott Galloway and Dan Harris.

0:01:52 He’s also on the weekend edition of Good Morning America on ABC News.
0:01:57 He spent over two decades reporting on major national and international events.
0:02:05 A pivotal moment in his career was an on-air panic attack in 2004 that prompted him to embark
0:02:11 on a journey of self-discovery, leading him to become a vocal advocate for meditation and
0:02:14 mindfulness, particularly for skeptics of those things.

0:02:48 The topics, as I know Barbara has briefed you on, is our situation with America’s men, you
0:02:53 know, sort of the 18 to 35-year-old who’s gone wayward.
0:02:55 Scott’s got wonderful statistics on this.
0:03:00 But before I bring you in, I just want to go to Scott for a second about the challenges that
0:03:01 young men are facing.
0:03:04 Everyone is talking about it, Scott.
0:03:11 I give you a lot of credit for this because you’ve been chipping away at this and now I’m
0:03:16 starting to see a mushroom cloud of activity come out from you dropping the first bombs.
0:03:21 I guess before we go to Dan, are we at an inflection point, sir, in terms of this issue?
0:03:24 Well, that’s a generous thing to say.
0:03:32 But yeah, and I first brought this up five years ago and immediately the gag reflex was
0:03:38 you’re a misogynist because all the people on this pod have had so much unfair advantage
0:03:42 for so long that there was a natural resistance to talking about the struggles of young men.
0:03:49 Because let’s be honest, we had a 3,000-year head start from 1945 to the next 60, 70 years.
0:03:54 The greatest prosperity ever recognized in the modern economy was recognized in the U.S.
0:03:56 and it was sequestered even further.
0:04:03 All of that prosperity was crowded into the 30% of Americans that had pale skin and outdoor
0:04:03 plumbing.
0:04:07 So naturally, people just weren’t that empathetic.
0:04:14 The conversation has changed so dramatically because the evidence, four out of five suicides
0:04:20 are male, 12 times more likely to be incarcerated, three times more likely to be homeless or addicted.
0:04:21 The data is so overwhelming.
0:04:29 And the cohort I credit with that pivot in the conversation, the dialogue, it can be described
0:04:30 in one word, mothers.
0:04:37 Feminists, right wing, left wing, all have come together and said, something is going on
0:04:38 with my son.
0:04:42 And so the conversation has become a lot more productive.
0:04:47 I can’t think the difference between me going on a podcast and talking about this issue five
0:04:51 years ago in the comments and the difference now is night and day.
0:04:54 So I think the dialogue has gotten a lot more productive.
0:04:57 And I’ll use this as a segue to ask Dan a question.
0:05:04 Dan, you really have, to a certain extent, you know, we never talked about cancer.
0:05:06 And then we started talking about cancer.
0:05:09 I remember when my mom got breast cancer, I couldn’t talk to my friends about it because
0:05:09 it was embarrassing.
0:05:13 And then we started talking about cancer openly, and it’s been a huge unlock.
0:05:17 And I think in the last 20 years, we’ve started talking about mental illness, and it’s been
0:05:18 a huge unlock.
0:05:25 And one of the taboos that I think you have played a role in unlocking is men talking about
0:05:25 anxiety.
0:05:31 Because for a man to admit that he was having a panic attack made you less masculine, made
0:05:32 you less strong.
0:05:34 And you have done that.
0:05:41 And the numbers, one in seven teens globally claim they have severe mental illness.
0:05:42 People are having panic attacks.
0:05:46 Without getting into details, I have someone in my life that is struggling with anxiety and
0:05:47 panic attacks.
0:05:53 Can you talk a little bit about not only you talk about how to address it, but if you’ve
0:06:00 given any thought to what we can do as a society to try and stem the flow of anxiety, of depression
0:06:02 and amongst our young people, I know you have kids.
0:06:03 Any thoughts?
0:06:06 I do.
0:06:07 I do have thoughts.
0:06:08 This is just a huge topic.
0:06:12 So I’m trying to figure out where to start.
0:06:17 I do want to just double click on what that’s such a douchey expression, but I’ll use it
0:06:26 anyway, on the point you just made, Scott, and about the need to rethink masculinity.
0:06:31 And I know you’ve been working on a book along those lines, because I listen to you a lot.
0:06:34 And I think it’s incredibly important.
0:06:36 And I think you’re right.
0:06:39 We’re at a moment where it is.
0:06:42 It’s feeling more and more urgent.
0:06:47 You may have already addressed this, but the, you know, the Netflix show adolescence, which
0:06:50 is just incredibly powerful and really goes right at these issues.
0:06:54 So, yeah, I spent a lot of time thinking about this.
0:07:02 And in terms of both men and boys and women and girls and everything in between, we do have
0:07:04 anxiety rising globally.
0:07:05 And what can be done about it?
0:07:08 Well, there are many, many things to say about this.
0:07:14 But I would say the number one thing, and this is relevant to masculinity as well, is that
0:07:21 we are isolated, lonely, disconnected, stuck in our own little worlds on our phones.
0:07:30 And that is, I believe, one of the major contributors to this spike in anxiety we’re seeing all over
0:07:30 the place.
0:07:35 We as a species did not get to the top of the food chain because we’re the strongest.
0:07:39 We have no talons, no wings, don’t have sharp teeth.
0:07:43 We’re not particularly big when compared to other charismatic megafauna.
0:07:48 We got to the top of the food chain because of our ability to cooperate, collaborate, and communicate.
0:07:55 All of that is militated against by most aspects of our modern culture, which emphasizes
0:07:59 tech-driven isolation, individualism.
0:08:06 And this, if we don’t have this social connection, if we don’t have positive relationships, we
0:08:07 wither.
0:08:13 And to me, it just seems very clear that if we can get people to get more intentional about
0:08:19 having positive relationships in their lives, it will go a long way toward addressing anxiety.
0:08:20 How would you do that?
0:08:22 Like, what programs could we do such that?
0:08:24 So first off, I agree.
0:08:25 We’re mammals.
0:08:29 Anyone who has dogs, realize dogs when they’re, the worst thing you can do to a dog is leave
0:08:30 it alone.
0:08:32 You put an orca in a tank alone, it literally goes crazy.
0:08:38 And I would describe us as that there’s a 35% uptick in social anxiety among young people
0:08:39 with COVID lockdowns.
0:08:41 I saw it with my youngest.
0:08:43 Him not being, I thought he’d be fine.
0:08:46 There’s a chance to hang out with your parents and watch Netflix.
0:08:50 He really struggled not being around a bunch of kids every day.
0:08:51 I mean, really struggled.
0:08:57 But what can we do, recognizing we’re mammals and people need to be around each other, especially
0:09:03 young people, what do you think we can do to just get kids in the company of other kids?
0:09:04 And here’s just another stat.
0:09:08 The number of kids, high school kids, that sees their friends every day has been cut in
0:09:10 half in the last 20 years.
0:09:17 That’s an incredible statistic, and it’s incredibly disturbing.
0:09:23 I am not, just to be clear, much of a policy thinker, a systems thinker.
0:09:26 I’m much more about what can you as an individual do.
0:09:29 So I’ll just put that out there as a caveat before I answer your question.
0:09:37 I think for a parent, it’s about thinking this through very clearly and understanding
0:09:44 that if you’re not helping your kid get face time with other kids, you’re hurting your
0:09:51 child, not deliberately, but once you know, you know, and you can take better steps to make
0:09:55 sure that your kids are getting that face-to-face interaction.
0:10:02 Now, if I’m directing my comments to somebody slightly older, a young man, or actually this
0:10:07 could go for anybody who’s feeling disconnected or lonely, the number one piece of advice is
0:10:08 to volunteer.
0:10:12 Get out there, do something useful for somebody else.
0:10:17 This is the most empowering and ennobling thing you can, it reminds you of your own innate
0:10:19 worthiness.
0:10:22 It puts you in contact with other people.
0:10:24 It’s incredibly helpful.
0:10:31 I want to talk about the toxic side of this, if you don’t mind, Dan, when you’re a social
0:10:34 observer, it’s the void.
0:10:37 I mean, this is the theory I’ve tested on a few of our other guests.
0:10:39 I want to get your reaction to it.
0:10:44 It’s the void getting filled by toxic masculinity.
0:10:48 It’s the void getting filled by hyper-masculinity.
0:10:49 I worry about that.
0:10:55 You know, it’s interesting, my own life, you know, I look at the culture and I see many examples
0:10:57 of toxic masculinity.
0:11:02 I don’t love that phrase because I do feel like it has been weaponized a little bit to
0:11:06 make men feel bad about being men.
0:11:09 So, yeah, I think it’s accurate.
0:11:14 There is, for sure, a version of masculinity that is quite toxic.
0:11:16 So it’s technically an accurate term.
0:11:22 But sometimes there’s something about the dialogue that has, I think, made it harder to reach men
0:11:31 because we’ve somehow sent the signal either explicitly or implicitly that you’re wrong or bad for just
0:11:32 having a penis.
0:11:42 And so I do want to just signal that I’m not trying to be overly, and this is another word that I worry about using,
0:11:48 but overly woke here when I talk about toxic masculinity.
0:11:55 I do see many, many avatars of unhealthy masculinity in the culture, the Tates, for example.
0:12:00 But in my own life, yeah, I don’t know if you guys know Strauss Zelnick.
0:12:01 Very well.
0:12:04 The very successful businessman.
0:12:05 Yeah, sorry.
0:12:05 We’re going to say something.
0:12:11 Oh, no, I’m just going to let you know, Dan Strauss is a very close personal friend of mine for 25 years.
0:12:14 Okay, so you and I are connected by one degree of separation.
0:12:16 Strauss is a very good friend of mine for about a decade.
0:12:21 And I’ve been recently doing his work.
0:12:22 He worked out.
0:12:23 The guy’s almost 68.
0:12:27 He’s in incredible shape for any age.
0:12:28 And he works out every day.
0:12:29 He’s got this thing called the program.
0:12:31 And a lot of young men are in the program.
0:12:33 And I go once in a while.
0:12:35 And meeting young men.
0:12:37 And these are like finance bros.
0:12:39 Let me stop you for a second, Dan.
0:12:40 So, Scott, do you know Strauss?
0:12:43 If you don’t know Strauss, he’s Take-Two Entertainment.
0:12:43 I do.
0:12:44 Okay, good.
0:12:51 He wrote a great book on this, by the way, on longevity, which I’d like to say that.
0:12:52 It’s called Ageless Fitness.
0:12:52 Exactly.
0:12:57 I’d like to say that I adopted some of it, but I’m still eating junk food and fast food.
0:12:57 But go ahead, Dan.
0:13:05 You know, Strauss is not overly, like, finger-wagging about, like, eating cookies.
0:13:06 He eats cookies.
0:13:11 He eats more just, like, get active, which I think is another, you know, get physically active.
0:13:20 I think this is another great piece of advice for young men because it does put you in contact with other people if you’re doing it, you know, in a group setting.
0:13:22 And it also is great for your mental health.
0:13:36 But having said that, through the program, I’ve met a lot of young, like, finance bros, guys who, when I was growing up, would have had, you know, a massive amount of casual misogyny just baked into their everyday conversation.
0:13:40 And the young men I’m meeting are much more sensitive.
0:13:43 And that may, you know, sensitive in a good way.
0:13:49 They’re just, they’re really earnest and interested in talking about improving their own mental health.
0:13:53 And that may just speak to the type of people that Strauss attracts.
0:14:04 But it’s interesting to me because I do look at the culture and I see, to your question, Anthony, that there are these great examples of how to do masculinity poorly.
0:14:14 And then in just in moving through the world, I see young men who are much less casually misogynistic than the world that I grew up in.
0:14:18 And frankly, I hate to say this, that I participated in.
0:14:23 Yeah, it’s, I was just thinking, I grew up on I Dream a Genie.
0:14:24 You know, yes, master.
0:14:25 Go to your bottle, genie.
0:14:35 I mean, it’s, I would say, given what we were fed as young men, you know, it feels as if we should get an Alan Alda award.
0:14:38 Anthony’s holding up an I Dream a Genie bottle.

0:14:42 Oh, wow.
0:14:42 Yeah.
0:14:45 So I have, I have a free pass for my wife.
0:14:47 This will probably get cut out of the thing.
0:14:49 But just so you know, I have a free pass for my wife.
0:14:59 I have dinner with her, I have dinner, I have dinner with Barbara once a year in June at the Beverly Hills Hotel in the Polo Lounge.
0:15:03 Unfortunately, she brings her 92-year-old chaperone who happens to be her husband.
0:15:06 But in any event, I thought you would enjoy that, Scott.
0:15:07 I love that.
0:15:08 Seriously?
0:15:10 That’s a flex.
0:15:11 That is a flex.
0:15:16 I mean, you know, Galloway, for somebody you’re vintage, this is a huge flex, right?
0:15:20 Let me, let me just, let me just really name drop here.
0:15:20 See this?
0:15:22 No, that’s, that is very, very.
0:15:22 All right, all right.
0:15:27 I’m sure that’s getting cut out, Harris, but that, I had to flex that on Galloway.
0:15:31 You know, he’s got, he’s got me by about six inches in height and God only knows what else.
0:15:33 So I had to, I had to flex that on him.
0:15:36 So Dan, returning to our regular schedule program here.
0:15:41 So you’re, I’ll paint a scenario for you.
0:15:48 You’re a 19 to 24-year-old male and you’re still living at home.
0:15:49 You’re, you’re struggling.
0:15:56 You find, you find that you’re having a tough time connecting with school, connecting with
0:15:59 work, connecting with potential friends, romantic partners.
0:16:06 And you find that your only kind of source of relief might be video games, isolation, maybe
0:16:07 porn.
0:16:14 And you, you, you might recognize that you’re struggling with stress or anxiety and you get
0:16:18 into social situations and you, you know, you get that feeling.
0:16:20 Your chest starts tightening.
0:16:25 You start gulping for air and all you can think about is, is getting out of that situation
0:16:27 back to where you’re comfortable again.
0:16:31 Try and advise that young man or young woman.
0:16:34 We all struggle with, I have panic attacks.
0:16:42 One, one at, I do 50 talks a year, era 0.66% of the time, every 150 talks, I have a panic
0:16:42 attack.
0:16:47 I don’t, I can’t figure out why it happens, but it feels like I’m dying on stage in front
0:16:51 of 400 people and I have to stop to talk and everyone freaks out and is worried.
0:16:59 Um, advise a young man or a young woman who recognizes they’re having this panic and this
0:17:06 anxiety on specific, um, cognitive behaviors, practices that you have used that you think
0:17:07 that they would benefit from.
0:17:17 Well, one thing to say is if you’re freaking out about, um, exposing yourself.
0:17:23 social situations and you’re, you’re young, um, recognize that this is not your fault.
0:17:25 You’re not, first of all, you’re not alone.
0:17:26 You’re not like uniquely dysfunctional.
0:17:28 This is very, very common.
0:17:35 And it’s my generation, our generation that created a world for you where you got insufficient
0:17:36 training in how to do this.
0:17:43 In part, this is massively exacerbated by COVID, but, but in part, because we as grownups
0:17:48 didn’t really understand that we, we needed, you know, we started helicopter parenting and,
0:17:56 um, we, we needed to create a world for you where you’re out, um, uh, bumping up against,
0:18:02 uh, other kids and getting scrapes and getting insults and, and learning how to build up your
0:18:03 psychological immunity.
0:18:04 And that’s on us.
0:18:10 And so what I want to first remove, hopefully is, is, is the shame.
0:18:14 Um, and then second, and this goes to masculinity.
0:18:16 And I know this is something you think about a lot, Scott.
0:18:23 Um, it’s like re re rethinking what, what is masculinity?
0:18:27 Strength is part of it, but what is real strength?
0:18:34 Real strength, I like in Buddhism, um, and I’m, I, I try to practice Buddhism that one
0:18:38 of the ancient symbols is a lion, which is a great symbol of ferocity, but it has nothing
0:18:39 to do with dominance.
0:18:44 It has to do with the courage to face your own shit, to face your own mind.
0:18:53 And that is what is required in order to do the work, to take the risk, to go out into
0:18:58 social situations, which is going to make you uncomfortable, to make you gulp for air, possibly
0:19:02 to provoke a starburst of self-critical thoughts in your mind.
0:19:05 Um, but that is courage.
0:19:07 And how do you overcome fear?
0:19:14 You face it in manageable little steps.
0:19:22 So take a little risk, divulge something personal to somebody you trust at work and see what happens.
0:19:29 Go to the party that you otherwise wouldn’t, um, go to, but, uh, tell yourself, you only
0:19:33 have to go for five minutes, baby steps of facing what scares you.
0:19:36 And over time, it won’t scare you as much.
0:19:38 Tell us how you did it in your own life.
0:19:39 That is real baller courage.
0:19:40 Dan, you write beautifully about this.
0:19:43 Give us a few examples of how you’ve done this in your own life.
0:19:45 Well, I still have panic attacks.
0:19:50 Um, um, right now, the big place of panic for me is claustrophobia.
0:19:56 So I’ve had a lot of trouble over the last couple of years on elevators and airplanes.
0:20:01 I, to a certain extent, blame COVID for this because when COVID hit, we, I, I moved to the
0:20:02 suburbs.
0:20:03 I wasn’t in the city.
0:20:05 I wasn’t on elevators anymore and I wasn’t flying.
0:20:12 And then when I went back to all of that, um, uh, I really started to struggle, uh, and, and panic
0:20:14 feeds on itself.
0:20:20 And so the only remedy is to face it, to actually put yourself in the situation that scares you.
0:20:26 Uh, so I would literally ride elevators at the Westchester mall with my shrink, uh, who would
0:20:32 help me, you know, see, to work with cognitive behavioral therapy, which is a psychological term
0:20:38 of art to face what was scaring me, to learn how to engage in supportive self-talk to talk
0:20:39 myself through it.
0:20:42 And, uh, it really helped.
0:20:49 And, and by the way, if you, we can go wherever you want here, but if you want a very specific
0:20:54 answer to Scott’s question earlier about cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to work yourself
0:21:00 through the shit that scares you, whether it’s social or anything else, I’m happy to talk about
0:21:02 that because there’s a lot to say there.
0:21:03 Talk about it.
0:21:04 If you don’t mind.
0:21:08 We, many of us believe that we have to have an inner drill sergeant in order to succeed.
0:21:15 If we, if somebody else talked to us the way we talk to ourselves, we would punch that other
0:21:16 person in the face.
0:21:20 And we believe consciously or subconsciously that we need this inner drill sergeant in order
0:21:22 to get anything done.
0:21:30 Uh, in fact, all the data show that an inner coach is much more likely to get you to,
0:21:31 to your goals.
0:21:35 Um, and this is referred to in the psychological literature as self-compassion.
0:21:41 So learning to talk to yourself the way you would talk to a good friend or to your kid
0:21:49 or a mentee, there’s a ton of data that shows that this is extremely helpful, especially in
0:21:50 situations where you’re scared.
0:21:56 So you don’t, I mean, it’s very helpful to go into situations that, that scare you with
0:21:56 a friend.
0:21:58 And by the way, I would recommend that.
0:22:01 Uh, but you can be your own friend in this regard.
0:22:05 And it’s slightly cheesy, but just learning to talk to yourself this way.
0:22:10 And it just as a little technical tip here to use your own name when you’re talking to
0:22:10 yourself.
0:22:14 Um, so I, I just say, dude, like, dude, I’m getting on a plane.
0:22:19 I’m worried about panicking in front of a bunch of strangers, dude, like you can, this
0:22:26 is just going to be a bunch of physical sensations, breathlessness, pounding in the chest that you have
0:22:28 experienced a million times and you’re still alive.
0:22:29 You can deal with this.
0:22:37 That little, that ability to talk to yourself that way is a trainable skill for anyone and
0:22:38 extremely helpful.

0:25:31 I have one 10-year-old boy.
0:25:41 And when you hear, when you see a show like Adolescence, when you hear about struggling young
0:25:49 men, how has it changed your approach or informed your approach to fathering?
0:25:52 Well, first of all, adolescence scared the shit out of me.
0:25:54 Really rattling.
0:26:03 It’s one of the most, just on a level of craft, it’s just one of the most, in terms of the acting
0:26:07 and the filmmaking and the writing, it’s just one of the most extraordinary pieces of art I
0:26:10 have personally consumed in a long time.
0:26:16 And absolutely, you know, with a 10-year-old boy, like, I couldn’t get him out of my head,
0:26:19 my son out of my head throughout the whole thing.
0:26:22 And so how does it impact my approach?
0:26:25 First of all, I think a lot about making sure he has healthy relationships.
0:26:27 And we think, he’s an only child.
0:26:32 And so we think a lot about making sure he sees his cousins a lot and making sure that he has
0:26:37 really good friendships that we are helping to nurture and that our house is a comfortable
0:26:39 place for him and his friends to hang out.
0:26:42 So I think about that a lot.
0:26:47 And then second, and again, I know this is something that you’ve spoken about a lot and you’ve been
0:26:54 an inspiration for me in this regard, Scott, is trying to both model and preach a little
0:27:01 bit to the extent that preaching is ever successful with a child, a different concept of masculinity.
0:27:10 That strength does not come from denying my emotions, from compartmentalizing, from self-medicating
0:27:11 with alcohol.
0:27:16 And I’m not saying that all drinking is bad, but if you’re doing it not to feel your feelings,
0:27:26 I worry about that, from showing respect to my wife in front of my son, I really think
0:27:32 about trying to model a kind of fierce masculinity that is the ferocity that we referred to earlier
0:27:37 in Buddhism, of the ferocity that says, yeah, I have panic attacks and I can admit that to
0:27:38 the world.
0:27:43 I can talk to you, my son, about this, that hopefully normalizes it for you.
0:27:51 So yeah, to me, that’s all part of, um, raising a healthy boy slash man now.
0:27:52 Anthony.
0:27:59 I, I, I, you know, I don’t, I don’t really want to add to me adding anything with the track
0:28:02 actually, because I think what you’re saying is so, so direct.
0:28:09 I guess one, one final question for you, Dan, uh, because I watched, uh, at Scott’s suggestion,
0:28:12 I follow, obviously we all follow Scott on social media.
0:28:13 The whole world does.
0:28:16 And I, I watched the whole show.
0:28:20 I asked my wife and my mother-in-law to watch it.
0:28:21 My mother-in-law turned it off.
0:28:25 She said that she was getting anxiety.
0:28:28 To quote her, I’m 79 years old.
0:28:31 I’m getting too much anxiety and I shut it off.
0:28:32 And so.
0:28:32 I get it.
0:28:35 So, so that’s my final question for you, sir.
0:28:43 How do we get people to breathe through what they see going on in this generation of young
0:28:43 men?
0:28:50 Well, uh, I think, I think it’s totally fine not to watch adolescence.
0:28:54 Um, and, uh, I get it.
0:28:56 It’s incredibly stressful.
0:28:58 It’s also extraordinarily beautiful.
0:29:05 Um, but the larger thing is what you said there at the end, Anthony, about breathing through
0:29:06 what’s going on.
0:29:14 Not only with, um, men and boys right now, but also in the whole world, it’s, this is
0:29:15 a destabilizing time.
0:29:20 So I’ll leave you with one little axiom that’s very helpful for me.
0:29:24 And I think I, I spoke about this a little bit with Scott on, on pivot a couple of months
0:29:24 ago.
0:29:29 Um, action absorbs anxiety.
0:29:29 I love that.
0:29:38 There is, there is, there is so, it can feel so powerless to sit and watch adolescence or
0:29:44 to watch the fucking news these days is for many of us, do we feel totally powerless and
0:29:51 helpless and, and, um, and, and, and then we, we get into a toilet vortex of anxiety.
0:29:54 You have more power than you think.
0:29:56 You can take action in your sphere locally.
0:30:00 It doesn’t even have to have anything to do with the issue you’re worried about.
0:30:04 You could just be marginally more helpful to the people in your environment.
0:30:07 As I often say, like, what’s it like when you hold the door open for somebody?
0:30:11 If you’re paying attention in that moment, it feels good.
0:30:13 That feeling is infinitely scalable.
0:30:16 The world is filled with opportunities to be helpful.
0:30:22 So I have a, I have a fairly, um, crass, but it’s an honest story.
0:30:29 I coach young men and this kid, he’s a junior college and doing okay, but hasn’t having issues
0:30:32 called me and I could tell he was beating around the bush.
0:30:33 And I said, what’s wrong?
0:30:38 And he said, I, you know, I had sex, uh, uh, with a strange partner.
0:30:42 I’m pretty sure he paid for it, but that’s neither here nor there.
0:30:47 And he said, and I’m feeling funny when I’m urinating and I’m a little bit freaked out about
0:30:48 it.
0:30:52 And, and I said to him and he said, and then he goes, but it’s probably nothing.
0:30:52 I’m sorry.
0:30:54 And I could tell the moment he said it, he was really embarrassed.
0:30:57 I’m like, boss today.
0:31:01 Now get to the doctor, get tested on your way to the doctor.
0:31:06 You’re going to start feeling better because it’s not the STD that you’re going to regret
0:31:08 if you have it or don’t have it.
0:31:11 It’s how much anxiety you put yourself through a hundred percent.
0:31:12 I’m like, get to the doctor.
0:31:14 Now take charge.
0:31:20 If you got something, if you got something, they can most likely address it, clear it up
0:31:24 because exactly what you’re saying.
0:31:30 And I realized this is, this is not a Hallmark channel story, but the moment you start to take
0:31:33 action against something, you start to relieve the anxiety.
0:31:36 And he called me the next day and he was fine.
0:31:40 And he was just like, you could just hear this giant fucking 24 hour, like sigh of relief.
0:31:41 Yeah, absolutely.
0:31:47 And, and I remember, I don’t know if you guys remember probably too much information, but
0:31:52 in the, in the nineties, we were raised to believe that if you had unprotected sex, I meant
0:31:52 you had AIDS.
0:31:54 I grew up in San Francisco in the nineties.
0:31:57 And if I had unprotected sex, I meant, oh, I’m Magic Johnson, but not as famous.
0:31:58 I know I have AIDS.
0:31:59 It’s not a question.
0:32:00 I know I have it now.
0:32:01 Yep.
0:32:07 And, and now, and then what I started doing was regularly getting tested and it just,
0:32:08 Great story.
0:32:13 It just absolutely made me feel, you know, took all of that bullshit away.
0:32:21 Cause when you’re real, I love the work that, uh, my colleague Adam Alter does on end of life.
0:32:25 He goes into palliative care and he surveys people who are literally at the end of their
0:32:30 life, which brings them a lot of perspective in their regrets are in reverse order.
0:32:33 They wish that they’d stayed in better touch with friends too.
0:32:37 They wish they’d led the life they wanted to lead, not the life, their church or their
0:32:38 parents or society wanted them to lead.
0:32:42 But their number one regret is they wish they’d been less hard on themselves.
0:32:47 And the thing you’re going to regret in your life is not, it’s not getting fired.
0:32:49 It’s not the breakup.
0:32:52 It’s not a stock that gets cut in half.
0:32:54 It’s not the STD.
0:32:57 It’s how much anxiety and punishment you put yourself through.
0:32:59 That’s the thing dying people regret.
0:33:01 It’s not what happened to them.
0:33:03 It’s how they responded to what happened to them.
0:33:09 And to your point, and I say this, I constantly parrot you, Dan, action absorbs anxiety.
0:33:12 You got a problem, start to address it and you immediately feel better.
0:33:14 It’s such a great lesson.
0:33:22 I mean, if I, if this whole Lost Boys series, people get out of it, that one sentence, it,
0:33:23 the whole thing is worth it to me.
0:33:25 It’s such a great lesson.
0:33:28 And I’m going to, I’m going to start saying that over and over again, Dan.
