Summary & Insights
Why do we spend so much of our lives running away from ourselves? Most of us rely on “low-grade addictions”—the mindless scroll through social media, the impulsive online shopping, or the evening drink—to numb a vague sense of discomfort. The irony is that the act of pushing away pain actually reinforces the habit of dissatisfaction. By constantly chasing pleasure to avoid hardship, we train our minds to be in a perpetual state of “wanting,” creating an endless hunger that no amount of external success or distraction can ever truly satisfy.
True stability doesn’t come from eliminating stress, but from changing our relationship with it. When we experience a crisis—like losing a job or a relationship—the natural tendency is to get lost in the “story” of the event, spinning webs of “why me” and “what now.” However, the path to resilience lies in moving beneath the narrative and focusing on the raw physical sensations in the body. By sitting with the tightness in the chest or the turbulence in the stomach without trying to fix it or flee from it, we perform a kind of emotional alchemy, transforming misery into a doorway for inner strength.
Meditation is often misunderstood as the act of clearing the mind, but attempting to silence the brain only makes the thoughts shout louder. In reality, the “distraction” is the most valuable part of the process. Every time the mind wanders and you gently bring it back to your breath, you are performing a mental rep, similar to lifting weights at the gym. The busier the mind, the heavier the weight, and the stronger the “muscle” of presence becomes. By undoing the habit of running away, we stop viewing ourselves as victims of our circumstances and start discovering a deep, internal peace that exists independently of external events.
Surprising Insights
- Distraction is a Tool: Rather than being a failure or an obstacle, getting distracted during meditation is actually the mechanism that builds mental strength. The act of returning to the focus is where the growth happens.
- The Trap of the “Ivory Tower”: If you have a ingrained habit of pushing away discomfort, you will find something to be unhappy about even in a perfect environment. The problem is the habit of avoidance, not the external stressors.
- Physicality over Narrative: The most effective way to handle emotional pain is to ignore the “story” (the facts and reasons for the pain) and instead focus on where that emotion lives as a physical sensation in the body.
- The Cost of Avoidance: Suppressing anxiety and depression through high-activity distractions (like “party animal” behavior) can lead to sudden, severe burnout because emotions cannot be permanently caged.
Practical Takeaways
- Practice Breath Counting: Sit or lie down and count your breath cycles (inhale/exhale = 1). Try to reach seven. When you inevitably lose count, gently start back at one without judging yourself.
- Locate the Sensation: During a moment of high stress, ask yourself, “Where is this feeling in my body?” Focus on the tightness, heat, or pressure in your gut or chest rather than the thoughts in your head.
- Commit to “Doing Nothing”: Dedicate 10 minutes a day to meditation. Focus on the process of “undoing” your habits of distraction rather than trying to achieve a specific state of “clear-headedness.”
- Reframe Hardship: When facing a difficult period, view it as “fertile ground” for developing resilience and compassion rather than a disaster to be escaped.

What if the most courageous, compassionate thing you could do in life, was to learn how to be with yourself? It’s a powerful, perhaps surprising idea put forward by today’s guest.
Today’s Bitesize is from episode 387 of the podcast with Gelong Thubten – Buddhist monk, meditation teacher and author of the fantastic book ‘A Handbook for Hard Times: A Monk’s Guide to Fearless Living’.
Thubten became a monk back in 1993 after suffering from severe physical and mental burnout whilst following his dream of becoming an actor in New York City.
We begin by talking about distraction and addiction, two states that are very closely linked. He explains that when we distract ourselves by scrolling, overeating, or drinking for example, we’re pushing away emotional pain or discomfort – even if we may not realise it. But the discomfort is really in the pushing. If we can learn instead to sit with what’s making us uncomfortable, those emotions start to transform.
